Hi all Just bought my first Ducati a Fila rep 749s, bought it knowing the clutch was worn, it is a Ducati performance slipper clutch, just took it out for a spin, very noisy, bites very late and squeals as well. What would you recommend? Ady
Are you sure i's a slipper clutch?? The quiet clutch mod would fix at least most of these problems for free but I don't know how/if it works with a slipper clutch. Has to be worth a try if you want a free fix that makes the clutch not only quiet but long lasting as well. One guy on here is in the high thirty thousands on the same plates and basket with the quiet clutch mod, without it you get just a few thousand. Alternative is to buy new friction plates, maybe a basket as well... Good news is that the clutch is generally very easy to work on but my own experience of slipper clutches is zero.
Thank you for the reply, I was told it was a slipper clutch but not being an expert I'm not sure? What's the difference? As for the mod as I understand it, just put an extra friction plate in first?
Well the outside of your pressure plate looks very much like mine, which isn't a slipper. If the inside has ramps and stuff on it, then it is presumably a slipper clutch but if it's just plain and smooth, it will be conventional. Yes, you can just put in an extra friction plate. Even easier though, it's perfectly possible to simply re-order your existing plates, so you start with a friction plate at the bottom instead of a plain plate.
just take your cover and pressure plate of to be sure whether its a slipper or not, will only take 5mins, ive got the jhp slipper clutch which is basically the ducati performance one, cant fault it, bought it second hand, gave jhp a quick phone and got the info to correctly assemble it, no problems at all since
I have been told by local Ducati expert it is a slipper clutch, can I still do the quiet clutch mod??
Yes, that's a spider spring. I ve never actually heard of anyone doing the mod on a slipper clutch but I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. The mod relies on the shape of the bottom end of the slots in the clutch basket and that will be the same. Do you actually want or need a slipper clutch? If you're not doing track days and are a fairly normal rider, it could be more trouble than it's worth. I wonder if @Derek knows about the quiet clutch mod on slipper clutches?
