I've had some bikes over the years and I'm lucky to say none of them have broken down on me. Until I bought a Ducati! Today I had my first all day ride out on the 1098 since I've had it. Before this I had completed a total of 30 miles on it. At least those 30 miles were all on the bike and not pushing like today. Hopefully someone can help with the problem. Here goes; The last few days I fitted the new slash cut Termignonis, DP ECU and a tail tidy. I already had the straight cut Termis but prefer the shape of the slash cut. I thought as I bought the whole kit (from ebay used) I may as well change the whole lot over rather than just the cans. Took it for a quick test ride and it was stalling all over the place. TPS? took it to the shop today as I predicted this would happen and got the TPS reset. on the way there it stalled. On the way back (in the rain) it was fine. Happy Ben. Later on, went out for a blast then it stalled on me again. Pulled over and got it going again. A bit further on, done it again. Almost home it done it again but this time wouldn't start and came up with fault codes. the fault codes are 10.2 Horizontal cylinder coil error 12.2 Horizontal cylinder injection error 13.2 Vertical cylinder injection error Each time it stalled on me I was starting to slow down from various speeds and had the clutch pulled in. Spoke to my bike shop guy and he said its pointing towards a dodgy ECU. What do you guys think? I have another DP ECU that I had for the straight cut Termis so I could change them over but surely if the coil/injection has gone its gone regardless of what ECU is in there? Hopefully ChrisW will see this and have an input but also from others as from google searches it seems its happened to a few bikes but can't find anything on a 1098. If I change over ECUs am I just pisssing in the wind? long story but best get all points across in the hope of some help. Thanks in advance Ben
Try the ECU first, simple job 20 mins to get the panel off swap the ECU and put the panel on, coils would be longer to change plus you've got a spare ECU = no cash outlay. If you get the same swap the front coil for the rear and see if the error codes move to the rear cylinder, if so bingo.
Thanks freak. Seems the logical thing to do. I assume that the fault codes are stored in the ECU? If so there is a chance the bike will start as the faults will not be present. Would this sort of problem, coil and injectors, show up just from tick over. My concern being that I have to take it out and push it home like I had to today. Or is it more likely that I change over ECU and if it is said problem then it will just not start and show same fault codes? As i write this I'm thinking there is one way to find out. Suck it and see!!
Check the coil/injector/fuel pump relay. You'll find it on the right side of the battery box. There are two there. The front one is for the fans and the rear for the coils etc. They are a cheap part to buy even from Ducati. You need a 12v 4 pin micro relay
Thanks Chris. I'll give that a look ASAP. Would there be any obvious signs of it being duff. Could it be tested in any way to tell or best just to replace it?
Those EOBD errors are classic duff relay signs. You will probably find the relay connectors are covered in Verdi Gris. Even if they look OK, replace them.
Got to the relays. Took them out and they don't seem too bad. I'll replace anyway. Getting them back in is going to be fun! All sorts in the way. Coolent hoses and wiring looms. I'll try post a picture of what it looked like. Don't suppose they have these jobbies down at halfrauds do they?
you've changed pipes and ecu and now its stalling, so surely you need to eliminate those new bits before you start looking at other causes, relays etc. put it back to how it was first and check whether the problem persists or disappears. Good luck
I see what you are saying but i don't know if changing the ECU can remove the fact I'm getting these error codes. If its saying it has coil and injector faults could these stem from a dodgy ECU and go by changing it. Am i right in saying it wouldn't matter if I put 10 different ECUs on it I would still get the fault? Hopefully someone will put me straight on this.
You appear to have the cleanest relays I've seen in a long time. As Freak has suggested, stick the stock ECU in and see if all is OK. This will be fine, short term. If the problem persists, then change the relays. If still persists then swap the coil sticks and see if the fault changes cylinder. Do the cheap stuff first. If it is the ECU then you know I can help out.
changing the relays should be part of the service regime. changed mine 2 or three weeks back, took it to skye last fortnight its the first time i have done 400mls without some sort of issue since i got it., odd random misfire or flicker of MIL light. never would i of associated them with the symptoms. and there cheep from ducati.
Ok cheers Chris. I'll give it a shot in the morning. When it was hooked up today the mechanic did say the ECU was programmed in 2011 so he said it was probably from a 1198. The guy I got it from said he had it in his 1098s. I may have to get it sent to yourself for analysis!
Dump question perhaps.... Have you re-earthed the the ecu correctly? Also the headlight uses the same relay if you want to play swap about.
Have you had the TPS reset following the ECU swap? 1098 should have lambda removed and mixture set up to.
Chris, the dash said the same as the old one '1098 Racing'. They are both Ducati Performance as I got you to check the numbers before. My mechanic guy said he thinks it's a problem with that after speaking to him on the phone. Nelly, I had the TPS reset yesterday morning, the day after fitting the cans and a ECU.
Update. So far; Changed over the ECU with my spare DP one. Error codes went but won't fire up. After two attempts got two of the three error codes 12.2 and 13.2 Horizontal and Vertical injection errors. Changed over the Coil/Injection/Fuel Pump relay with the fan relay. Same thing. Same codes and won't fire up. So I have ruled out the new ECU, and the relay. At the moment I have put it back to how it was with the new ECU and relays back in place. Looks like it beckons the shop and no riding for me in this lovely weather. Any pointers from this point?
This problem is really starting to hurt my head now. All today I have googled and searched articles referring to the same problem as mine. I have noticed two common outcomes from all those that I have read. 1. Not one of the articles I found actually found the fault to be what the error codes stated (12.2 & 13.2, Horizontal and Vertical injection error). It seems that these codes are thrown up as a result of another problem rather than these failing. 2. The vast majority of problems were found to be a) ECU or b) injector/coil/fuel pump relay. I've tried a different DP ECU and I've swapped relays over to rule both those out. ANNOYING !!!!! I'm running out of ideas/skill level of things to check.
