I had the 848 serviced as its been 6 months since picking it up new. Bike has done just 300 miles so far. Guy at garage said I can open it up now as its done enough miles. Still concerned that I should see more miles on it before I ride it more spirited. What do you think?
300 miles in 6 months? Jaysus I've done 1800 on mine since I picked her up and I've hardly been out cos the weathers been shite.
Read an article a while ago about running in engines - Fireblades I think. The upshot was that, in these days of super accurate machining tolerances, modern oils etc, once the engine is warm, give it the full berries from new, do not faff on with running in revs etc. Bikes thrashed from the start had up to 10 more BHP than ones whose owners had followed the manual. But what ever course you choose, get the miles in !! 300 in 6 months is bit poor going - ride it to work, in the evening - fish and chips at the coast is also good !!
I know the 300 miles is pitiful but the days when the weather has been half decent i've had other commitments with the family and living in Birmingham working in London doesn't help much.
You're choice at the end of the day I've just got my new 848 less than a week ago I'm sticking to the 6000rpm rule but I might let it have a few revs more after about 500 mile it's getting the first service in 3 week
Loads about running in new engines on the american bike forums, with supporters on both sides of the argument. What I have noticed is that those that thrash from day one soon moan about how much oil their engine uses, and those that over baby it moan that their engine smokes from the exhausts. Aim for the middle.
If it was me, I'd just gradually start to explore the rev range as the miles increase - mostly in line with the manual. Your choice at the end of the day, but to be honest, a coupe of reasonable runs out and you'll be give it the berries anyway!
