First Track Bike Purchased

Discussion in 'Other Bikes' started by thespionkop, Oct 7, 2014.

  1. Well finally gone and got myself a gsxr600 for track use only, been raced so is all set up came with second set of wheels and a set of wets..

Now I need to fine tune it for me...suspension is standard so that will be first port of call. Anyone suggest a specialist other than kais? NOT looking for ohlins forks and rear shock but certainly proper set up and something along the lines of front fork/ rear shock refurb ( new springs etc) I am in the merseyside area and while I rate kais there are some internal changes being made that May lead me to looking elsewhere!

Will chuck levers and rear sets on but not a priority

Considering changing wheels, maybe some forged OZ

    Change battery to Lithium

Get some new race fairing as it's a little tatty

First run out on track will be next Wednesday so mods will begin after that

    Any advice, recommendations welcome

    Thanks

  5. JMT for the battery - avail on ebay £61

    what year gsxr is it?

if it's a k6/7 don't get diamond rearsets they are a b'std to fit as the rear brake m/c won't fit without filing the holes out. GBMoto rearsets are good.

  6. There's no right or wrong on this.... It's your bike but here's my thoughts.

If it's set for track use, run it and see how you go. The standard suspension is probably fine once it's been set up. If there's a suspension company at your trackday, spend your money with them and you'll have it sorted by the end of the day. Having said that I expect I'll have Maxton work on my forks at some point.... They're top notch.

As with anything you can go mad and spend a fortune upgrading bits so be careful. Decide what you really need and what's just bling as you'll need the money for tyres! I know a battery is heavy but you'll still enjoy it and I doubt you'll miss the 1/2 second a lap difference it would make.

As long as the fairings are secure, I'd not worry too much about them. It's not like a road bike.... It's a track tool at the end of the day. If you come off you'll be glad you had old fairings rather than new bling ones. I'm going to spend some time filling and respraying mine this winter but can't justify splashing out on new unless they're unusable.

From my point of view, I bought my Daytona in May and I've done the following so far :

    £40 for suspension setup.

    Rearsets (replaced standard pegs).

HM quickshifter (keep up with the 1000cc boys easier out of the corners).

sigma slipper clutch (just epic.... Let's you concentrate on Braking and turn-in points..... And the back fishtails nicely too and I DEFINATELY look like Marquez now ;-)

Replaced standard steering damper (original filled with water from what I could tell)

    Cleaned and locktighted stuff

  7. Ktech for fork/shock work. If you cant get them off yourself and send, try hammer n tongs over in wooley Warrington to strip send and refit for you.

  8. yeah save ur cash n run as is...the bike will be a lot better than you are just now up until you get confident and start pushing..only then will you know what needs changing

  9. disagree with above. as a minimum get suspension set up, the basics like sag etc, it makes a huge difference from the outset.

  10. Nothing wrong with them at all, I heard on the grapevine Nick is leaving soon and I prefer dealing with him

  11. @bradders yep I will have someone with me on the first track run he is a mechanic and has worked consistently on the Ulster, IOM TT AND MANX for the last 8 years so he knows far more than I could ever dream about...

So once I "feel" her in I will look at what might help me ride more confidently/safer/quicker

I am no racer this is purely fun for me I just don't want to drop my hyper or 1098 so the gixxer seemed the wise move

Having a tow bar fitted to the motor and now need a trailer,,,,bloody costly this hobby lol

Thanks for all the wise words fellas it's appreciated

  12. get ready for thinking your breaking it when you arent even in the power yet...

  15. It's a 2007 bike mate will avoid the diamonds

  16. Ok now I need a trailer....any ideas on best available

  17. Titan or other fold down one. Easy to store in a shed/garage, less likley to get nicked, can even fit in the boot of some cars

  18. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Well track day done, bit late posting and although in the novice group I was right up the front so pretty chuffed. Bike was superb, standard gixxer600 but had wets on for first couple of sessions (damp track) settings were great bags of confidence in the bike and tyres..
Just ordered bonamicci rear sets, have a PCIII to fit, will add quickshifter see how its goes. No doubt few more mods before the start of the bike year in 2015...

Tracking her again on 1 no at oulton park ( my local track)

    Cheers
