Fitting A 916/748 Tank To An S4. Advice Needed Please

Discussion in 'Monster' started by Zhed46, Oct 3, 2015.

  1. I'm shortly going to be replacing the tank on my S4 with one from a 748 and just wondered if any of you who have done it or know of others who have done it could give me any pointers please so I don't have to reinvent the wheel.

I've worked out or have been advised....

    1. Get rid of the airbox and fit pods over the velocity stacks. I've got another thread on the go about this already.

    2. Relocate the battery and ECU etc. Not entirely sure where everything will go as I've only seen one pic of someone who's done it to a M600, which has much smaller heads than the 916 engined S4. Im sure it'll become a bit clearer once I've removed the airbox etc.

    3. Mount the rear of the 748 tank on the hinge of the Monster. Not sure exactly how until I've got it all offered up, but it looks like it may need a adapter or spacer making?

    4. Find some way of securing the front of the 748 tank. I'm wondering if I can transfer the clip from the front of the Monster tank to the front of the 748 tank? However, I'm sure that as the centre of the 748 tank is recessed it may not reach. Also not sure how to mount this clip as I dont fancy drilling the 748 tank. It's riveted to the Monster tank, but if it is a feasible solution I'm wondering if a couple of spot welds might do the job? This is my sticking point at the moment.

    5. Plumb all the fuel lines in etc and plug in the fuel pump connector.

    6. Reshape the front edge of the Monster seat to fit the back of the 748 tank.

Thanks in advance for any help or opinions.

  3. Rather than adapting tank can you find a way of using the original 748 pin at the front. There is a bit of space on monster frames round where it would end up.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  4. Weld a strut across frame with a lug on it to receive the male tank mount of the 748 tank.

  5. Thanks for that advice. I'd already received the same words of wisdom from someone else who has done it and so that is what I'll be doing.

I've already removed the airbox and fotted pod filters and so I'm ready to go forward with the actual tank swap now.

I can actually weld and do bits and bobs of fabrication, but it's been a while and as I don't have a workshop or access to one and I don't fancy risking butchering the frame if I screw it up, the welding of a bracket across the frame and making up a battery box and whatnot is being entrusted to Rosso Corse at the end of the month.
