749 Fitting New Front Sprocket.....

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Daikinman, Jul 15, 2015.

  1. Hi,
Hope this is not a dumb question, but I am now in the process of replacing the chain and sprockets on my 749 after stripping and rebuilding it. The chain is off and the old front sprocket removed (not done the rear yet). I tried to fit the new one last night, but i can't torque the holding nut up to the massive 186 Nm setting as the engine just rotates. I have done what the workshop manual states by putting it in a low gear but this failed to hold. So I tried in all gears and it still just rotates the engine when ever try to get some pressure on it.
Do I need to install the rear sprocket and chain first? Then try with it in gear and someone standing on the rear brake? Or is there something I'm not doing correctly?

Any advice or tips are greatly received. :)

    Cheers, Dave.

  2. Have someone push the rear brake pedal and sit on the bike after installing the chain and rear sprocket.

  3. Put a short length of timber though the wheel and revolve until it's firmly against the swing arm, then tighten.
