really thinking of buying an 1100 or 1100s about 2007- 2009 to run alongside my 999s, seen a couple but I'm a bit bothered by flaking paint on the engines, is this a known problem or nothing to worry about? everything else I am happy about, any advice appreciated
Yep... I'd say expect whatever you get to peel.... Just put a deposit on my 1100evo sp and fully expect it... I'm planning on keeping it so at whatever point the motor needs to come out in the future it'll be getting the xylan treatment at Sandwell coatings... Xylan is a high quality everything proof coating... Had my ktm don't with it last year....
Standard feature on all Ducatis. Allegedly, they don't use etch primer in their paint process. Some people just touch in with Hammerite or whatever, others do it properly with etch primer and spray. Others get seriously expensive bulletproof coatings applied.
I was on my tablet yesterday so a little fiddly to post pics.... Heres my 525 motor straight out of the frame... Sent it here....and had this coating applied to the parts (engine has to go in bits...) crank cases barrel etc etc... Xylan Low Friction Coating - Sandwell UK Came back looking like this.... And then got built into this.... This is ultimately what ill do to my evo sp at the point the motor needs to come out for whatever reason...
The 525 is up for sale at the moment top fund the incoming evo sp - ill never see the money back but it was something that I felt needed to be done....(standing on soap box now) - that's how you fucking coat stuff correctly Mr "head of coatings at Ducati...."!
My 2012 evo has no done 3 winters (36k), only bad paint is front cylinder fins & alternator cover, crankcases are still good, but hardly noticeable, ACF50 before winter, no wash till spring, always surprises me how good it comes up!
My bike is 5 years old and 8k miles and still in pretty good condition on the engine paint , doesn't get used through winter though
Mine has got 8.2k.....the lad who owns it has the shittest camera in the world so I can't see the state of the barrels but won't be surprised by whatever I see....
