1997 600 supersport. Oh dear. 3rd time on my lovely new bike and it's spotless no more After being out for a good ride the steering lock caught me out while carrying out a slow turn. I managed to break the fall of the bike as best I could but the nett result was a broken front brake lever and a few superficial scratches. Absolutely pig sick but trying to look on the bright side, it could have been a lot worse I suppose? The question is now, can I replace the brake lever itself or is it a new brake lever assembly? Apart from the actual lever snapping there is no other damage to the lever assembly. Is it a 'off the shelf' universal type part? Any advice appreciated. Gino.
Original Brebo levers are available from Ducati dealers, or buy usedon ebay, or take the opportunity to fit some adjustable ones. Youll get a pair of pattern adjustable ones for less than one new Brembo. The Bikeit ones are good quality and are in the same style as the original levers.
Thanks Gilps, Are they quite readily available normally in bike shops, I'm itching to hit the road again!! Thanks again, G.
there are pattern copies of the originals available for about half the price fitted one to a 98 monster, only difference is ducati is not cast into the recess on the lever
If you get stuck, I can lend you one..... You may find secondhand ones around..........if you get a choice of Brembo or Cagiva ones, go for the Brembo......Cagiva break easier and you probably can't straighten a bent one, but Brembo will straighten if careful. AL
Thanks for the offer AL, it's appreciated. After much ringing round I'm off to Leeds to pick one up along with some other bits and pieces while I'm there. Back on the road soon all being well!! Thanks again, G.
When you swap the levers over be really careful not to lose the small tube/plastic piston which fits inside the mechanism and activates the switch. It's quite small.
Thanks for the advice, the switch appears to be very fragile??? Had a drive to Cobb & Jagger to pick up the brake switch, what a lovely bunch of people. They were having a try a bike day today, lots of butties and pasties & some lovely bikes!!
Do yourself a favour while messing with the front brake... ditch the crappy micro switch and go to a Hydraulic switch... Much Much Much better. the last time I ran one of them micro switches, I guess the little plastic bit was worn, but it got caught in between the lever and m/c body, thus causing the front brake to bind... NOT COOL! The levers from a lot of older Husqvarna will fit too by the way
Does the hydraulic switch fit in line is and actuated by the hydraulic pressure when you put the anchor on?
Yes, its basically a new banjo bolt with the wires coming out of the end... They are available cheaper, but to give an idea... Goodridge hydraulic brake light pressure switch 10x1.00 Double Brembo STAINLESS | eBay
Hi Duke, you were right about the front brake switch, it's given up the ghost tonight. Is 10 x 1.00 the right thread size for the bike? I'm going to get a couple on order. Cheers, G.
I believe they'rethe 10x1.00 , they're certainly the finer threaded ones! I'll have to check tomorrow to confirm 100%
Be very careful when winding the bolt up tight............inspect it for leaks, because I have found that depending on who manufactured these bolts some are a fraction too long and 1) They don't fully compress the copper washers because the tapping in the brake unit has run out of thread; and 2) The washer thickness is fairly critical and can throw the fluid holes off centre in the unions, so the brakes might not work too well.
