I'm a bit worried about my front brake pads. I rode down to Poole from London yesterday and just happened to look at my front calipers when I arrived. The pads looked a bit low, which is worrying as I'm on a trackday on wednesday. Just to be safe I'm going to get hold of some new pads, but im a bit worried about bedding them in before Wednesday, especially as I won't get them until Monday at the earliest. How much friction surface should I be able to see without taking the caliper off?
Don't risk using your old pads Matt, as you know, the amount of braking in one corner on a track is immense. When your new ones come, swap them over and just make sure you use your brakes on the sighting laps (maybe go out at the back of the group), they should bed in quite quickly. I hope this weather lasts for you
If you can see 1 mm your be fine as for bedding in new pads if you buy good pads you can just warm them on your sighting lap then just use them as you would normally I recommend bendix road/race you won't have any problems with these .
hi, be careful, if you are using standard brake lines (first to right caliper and then to the left) the pads on the right side will be much used than the ones on the left. To be sure that the pads are ok i suggest to take off both calipers, this is really quick work. if you intend to run more track days get goodridge or hel brake lines in full race setup. the advantage will be, same usage of the pads on both side and much easier removal of right caliper (short screw instead of long one, the long one will be on master cylinder). I do app 3ooo km / year on track and I use ferodo pads FDB2218-CP211 or FDB2218-XRAC, they will last for app 600 - 700 km, sufficient performance and not very expensive. The difference is the progression of braking. remember to not to hard brake during first two laps otherwise you will kill the pads.
You'll bed pads in in the first session on a trackday, just take it easy bit like scrubbing tyres. If in doubt swap them out though.
Track day.............. one lap get em hot then let em cool. Like kenoir, I like the PF pads, either 07 or 95 compound
