It's been a while since I dismantled the bike, I didn't take note, does anyone know which way round the spindle sits between the bearings? It has a notch on it and I think it's the notch faces the ABS ring, but can't be sure...

It won’t make any difference. The notch is there just so you can get a long thin tool (screwdriver) in to drift out the bearing - in situations where the correct bearing puller is not available.
