1199 Front Wheel Bearings Change

  1. Need to change front wheel bearings on my 1199. Any tips? Do I need special tools. Looked at few videos online and it’s not as easy as it sounded?
Also, is there anyone in W/SW london have front stand for pani I can borrow for weekend? I tried to use front stand from my 999 and it sort of works but deffo not super steady!
Dont want to buy one as I live in small place in london and just not have enough space to keep yet another stand!

  2. Assuming you can lift the front of the bike when it's on the rear stand all you need to do is remove the wheel, reinsert the spindle through the fork legs and then rest the bike on an axle stand (if you have one).

As regards the bearings the only tools you need are a drift and a mallet. The first bearing is the hardest. You have to get onto the inner edge whilst the spacer is in the way. Once moving it'll go easily. The other side is a doddle as you'll have full access.

As regards replacing the bearings use a socket on the outer face of the bearing to drive it home. Do not use the bearing inner face! Replacing the oil seals is also recommended.

Both bearings and seals can usually be bought as aftermarket items, subject to dimensions. SKF or any Japanese manufactured bearings are the best choice.

  3. Plus put the new bearings in the freezer for 24 hours then pop them in, makes it so easy.

  4. A drift and a mallet alone will not work... never ever, never. Refer to the following video for removal options.

  5. Wow that's a bit more complicated than my old 748! :)
