Fuel PUmp assembly help

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Etherion, Aug 7, 2012.

  1. Hi all,

I'm in the process of fitting the fuel pump into the tank and wondering if anyone had any tips to follow?

ie, do i need to change the sealing ring? Do i put sealant from where it sits and on the screws too?

    Or simply fit and tighten?:)

btw, this is on an 748.

    Many Thanks

  2. A new sealant ring with a thin smear of vaseline or grease is a good way to go - If you find 3 slightly longer than stock bolts with some chunky washers to cover the pump assembly, and then tighten them down evenly until the seal has passed the lip - then replace with the stock bolts all should be good - arsey bloody job tho. 3. you're bound to get a plethora of slightly differing answers, here's mine - some people say fit a new seal everytime but if you inspect it carefully for nicks or aging or damage and that it hasn't swollen for any reason (WD40 will do this) i.e. it fits the periphery snugly i'm sure it will be fine. They do vary slightly but the trick is to go slowly checking that the seal stays in it's 'trough'. I use rubber grease just to help matters but I don't use any additional sealant.

  4. I fit a new O ring every time . I know the size and buy them at £1 each so its not worth using an old one. I can push my fuel pump home with my thumbs on my 999 and never get a leak. Use a grease designated for rubber and you shouldnt have a problem. By the way a ducati purchased O ring is £16 believe it or not.

  5. Thanks for all the replies.

Gonna get a oring just to be sure.

How do you know what size o-ring it is and where would i be able to buy diffeent orings?

Btw, i presume red rubber grease is ok to use?

    Cheers

  6. They are 90mm x 3.5mm . The 90mm is the internal diameter . Made of Nitrile rubber I believe . You will get 5 for £5 off a well known auction site. I think the actual number of the O ring ,if you were to order one from the likes of bearing services, is 239 .

  7. I bought a new o ring when I changed my fuel filter.Took a chunk out of it when fitting it,so fitted the old one.Took my time ,jobs a goodun.

  8. I put a new seal in every time as the last time I tried to reuse one it had become a bit bigger than original size an wouldnt fit.

  9. Cheers for all the replies. I've bought an o ring and some castrol red rubber grease for the job.

I do see another problem though. There are 2 rubber hoses connected in the fuel tank which connects to the fuel pump.

However, on the old tank, the hoses are secured using a clip which is screwed like really tight and on the new tank, they are secured by cable ties.

My question is - is it ok to just use the cable ties to secure to the inside of the tank as it is now or do i need to remove the 2 hoses from the original tank and use the original screw clips to secure it to the new tank?

I presume these are breather pipes?

    Cheers
