Going to attempt to change the fuel filter on my 999S over the weekend, does anyone have any tips on easy and painless removal of the fuel pump assembly, how straightforward is it?,i've never taken one out before.
They come out quite easily but getting the fuel pump back in can be difficult . Make sure you have a new 'O' ring for the pump or you may never get it back in. Theres threads in the pump to jack it out and the nuts are designed to help pull it back in .
Yup, not too difficult. Be carefull when refitting with new O-ring. Its easily damaged and if you get a fuel leak, petrol drips straight onto the exhaust header of the vertical pot. Not good.
Thanks ducati2242 and Mary....what causes the difficulty in getting it back in?,i've got a new O ring and I assume it needs some grease/vasolene on it when re- assembling,i've got most of the weekend to kill...
Its a couple of years back since I did it but I don't recall much difficulty. But I do remember the pesky petrol leak afterwards... Doh..
Got as far as removing the seat unit and wedging a block of wood under the tank....I was under the impression that there would be a couple of quick release connectors on the fuel lines which would just disconnect, however as far as I can tell the fuel lines are just pushed onto the metal fuel pipes on the base of the pump assembly,my question is will these just pull off and will there be a flood of petrol when they do come off?....the bike is a 04 model.
There is a small metal bracket between the connectors that needs to be unbolted. This holds them in place. Once removed the connectors pull out and should self seal.
dont forget to stick some rag under the pipes area to stop the excess fuel dropping on your painted areas when you put the pump back in make sure its square or else you'll pop the o ring out at a point pinch it and that'll be that.new o ring required.you can use slightly longer bolts to start with puling the pump down rather than the fixing bolts!
Thanks for all the advice...closer inspection revealed no bracket to remove between the pipes,so it does have the quick release unions ,i just pinched the tops of the connectors and pulled and they both came away with a thimble full of petrol out of each,i have removed the pump assembly and changed the filter ,i used 3 long bolts in the spare threaded holes to jack the assembly out evenly ,I will be re-assembling tomorrow ,looking at the 'o' ring it doesn't look worn at all,has anyone re-used one before?...
false economy re using the o ring....they swell with the fuel and dont go back in the same place......worth a gamble spin the wheel...
They can be re-used yes but if it is a few years old, just change it. There is a link on here somewhere if you want a cheaper alternative. Use Vaseline to lubricate it on reassembly and it carefully pushes back on by hand if you dont nick it. Piece of piss of a job and its always worth adding a pint of fuel before putting the tank back on the bike... just in case. When you re-assemble you will more likely have trouble with the quick release couplings. I give the tabs a squeeze so they click in better and apply a very thin layer of Vaseline to the inside edge of the base plate holes to help the connector o rings slide in correctly. Word of warning.... Dont put the seat all back together yet but push it own all the way and make sure the fuel pipes are correctly seated in the grooves under the tank. Then turn the ignition on and off several times to pressurize the fuel system and watch the connectors carefully. If they move out under pressure or are not seated fully flat, do not start the bike as they are likely to pop off. The tabs on the connectors must not be rounded or damaged by taking them off or.... They are not too expensive from Ducati so if in doubt, replace. Safety first.
Yes thanks mate, getting the pump assembly back in was easy with liberal amounts of Vaseline,it literally just pushed back in by hand. The only bit I was a bit dubious about was when I pushed the quick release connectors back, the right hand side one clicked in but the left side one didn't click and didn't seem to have gone back on properly ,but I did like you said and pressurised the system a few times by turning the ignition on and off and everything seemed Okay...bolted the seat down and hit the starter button and she fired up almost immediately....defo a job that wont faze me in future.
Result. Do keep an eye on the connectors as they should go click. You can just press the tabs in a bit. The o rings dont like going in dry either but you know what your doing now.
I would double check that quick connector that didn't click in, they can stick a bit and I have found if they don't click in you can still pull them out, remove the connector and check the chrome clip has returned properly and try again, I wouldn't be happy until it clicks in. Steve PS Well done for having a go in the first place.
they are plastic on xx9 bikes lubricating the o ring before assembly will avoid it pinching and help it go in properly. i agree it should click k but if its been oressurised a few times you would soon find out if it wasnt in. the thing to watch is that when you remove them that you dont damage the lip of the connector that sits on the flange (the bit that goes click). the edge should be sharp and undamaged. if it looks rounded in any way, replace it as it is likely to pop off. if they were metal they would be much safer.
Are they different to the 748 ? This is a pic of mine and the chrome clip slides and can get stuck so it doesn't click back in. Steve
If only they were like that Birdie it would be so much easier to modify them . I have been going to see if it would be possible to cut them off and tap the base plate to accept a threaded one like this picture . Maybe over xmas hols .
