Hi Gang My 996S, 2001 is running great after removing the horrible datatool alarm. I am after some guidance on fixing the fuel warning light. It definitely does not work as I ran out! The bulb is good - checked by putting it onto 1 of the other sockets. It does not light up when I switch ignition on. Should it? How can i find out if it is eg the sender in the tank, a damaged cable, between the instuments and the sender or soemthing else? Thanks in advance for any help. I have 2 other bikes (both BMWs. sorry) and want to ride the 996 as well as i can , before the summer is gone. Nick
It's easy to check but I guarantee the problem is the thermistor in the tank. To check, disconnect the 4 pin plug at the bottom of the tank (best remove the tank altogether). 2 of the 4 pins are fuel pump positive and ground. The other 2 are for the fuel idiot light. Use a multimeter to find fuel pump positive ( you'll see 12V for 2 seconds when turning on ignition) and ground is well ground. Bridge the other 2 wires together and switch on ignition. The fuel light should come on. If it does the problem is the thermistor. If you want to have a go at changing it, it's a 1000 ohm thermistor which costs around 40 pence.
Unlike a car, when you turn the key, it will only light up if the fuel is low. These are known for being a problem. I had one sender that was on 50% of the time, even after just filling the tank. Check the wiring but it is almost certainly the sender unit on the fuel pump or associated wiring. Remember to have a fresh seal to replace the fuel pump in the tank before commencing the job and google the process. Also, you need to empty the tank to do it which is easier if it's low already Good luck PS, be very careful with the big plastic nut on the sender unit. If it breaks you will have a bad day
I've never trusted any motorcycle fuel light. Reset trip & hit the pumps every 100/120 miles when your arse is numb.
Mine's been permanently ON the 998 since i purchased it, i'll just look into the petrol tank before the start journey, and yes i do have one in stock whenever the tanks gets removed at a later date.
