Garage Security...

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by jamesgarnor, Oct 2, 2020.

  1. I'm needing to put up a security camera on the front of my garage, the garage is at the bottom of the garden (I live on a corner). So it would be 35 meters from the router it can be mains powered. Has any one any experience of such things or could recommend a camera with a suitable wifi range please?

  2. Were you in the Rockford Files?

I’m sure an IT bod will be along soon. I have a camera covering my garage but I’m a bit old school with security. Big thick chains and Bullmastiff method.

  3. Yes i used to enjoy the Rockford files:upyeah:...as above on the outside with heavy duty security ironware,as the police might not recognized the intruders on film if they're wearing balaclavas.

  4. I bought a Blink system. Similar distance from router to garage so bought the below to boost range. My router just about picked up the signal but sometimes dropped out, I now get full signal with the booster plugged in halfway between router and garage.

  5. Powerline adapter? Just done this with mine and working well enough.

Im looking again for an outside cam that doesn’t need power so I can add one for the back garden and the outside of the garage. Another break in recently so want to just add a bit more security

  6. Netvue cameras are cheap, alert on your phone, save to sd card and the cloud and can also show on Amazon echo screens.
I have multiple alexas so every time someone goes to the gate or the stables all of them announce the event at the same time, so I also have an audible alert.

  8. As you note, WiFi range is a challenge, and others have made suggestions on that.

What I will say is that I use [multiple] EZVIZ WiFi cameras that I picked up from Argos for £30 (indoor) and they are excellent - with options to record to the cloud etc (for a fee, obviously).

I see they also have an outdoor version for £80.

Mine are within about 15-20m of nearest WiFi, and through several walls, and stuff, so not bad WiFi range either.

  9. worth noting my wifi cam worked great in the garage until I had it lined and insulated. Now even the wifi extender wont pick up house wifi.

  10. I've got three camera from Ring, One is outside and a bit far from my network. I bought a bigger Wi-Fi aerial for a Netgear router attached by wire to my EE network hub. The Ring camera is outside about 25 metres away from the Netgear aerial (which is inside) and the signal needs to go through two walls.

Ring cameras are only about £50 each (you can get them erectly from Ring or Amazon do them). I am thinking about getting a fourth for my garage. Might be worth a try.

They use your (of somebody else's) Wi-Fi to communicate with their base (maybe in Germany) and then you can be anywhere in the World and see what the camera see using your mobile. I've been quite impressed with Ring.

    Why?

  12. Waste of time and money. Any two bit thief covers their face - how hard is it?

Spend the money on anchoring the bike. Most are after what is easy to wheel out, they're not interested in spending an hour or two working out how to free a well secured bike.

  16. Although the house and garage are on a monitored alarm I also use Blink XT. One inside the garage and a couple outside. For the price, I reckon nothing comes close, although now I think there is a subscription for data. They are not an alarm replacement but connected to IFTTT they do notify phones and turn on lights when they are set and tripped. They can be set remotely as required and also scheduled. There is a slight activation delay (couple of seconds) but they seem reliable and very easy to set up. I use Ubiquiti mesh which covers all of house, garage and garden. Oh, and chains and ground anchors.

  17. It's for the front of the garage. So outside and not really to protect my bike which is secured as well as it can be, but my wife's car which is rarely left outside but has been tampered with while standing on our drive four times in the last six months making it dangerously unsafe.
Many thanks for the suggestions, we'll look into them.
