1200 Garmin 220 Zumo (ducati Model) Reliability.

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by **Topher**, Jun 3, 2014.

  1. I have a Ducati Garmin 220 Zumo for a couple of years now which in my opinion has never been that reliable. I only tend to use it when doing Euro trips.

It is very slow to update as you travel .... quiet often I have passed the turn/junction before the screen updates. It's as if I'm travelling faster than the device can respond but this usually happens in urban areas.

It gets locked in a loop and directs you round in circles. This may just be a mapping error from Garmin but very frustrating when you are trying to navigate in unfamiliar territory especially busy ring roads in Europe.

When changing route destinations it hangs on 'Calculating' not showing any % of how much of the new route calculation has processed. I have resorted to taking the battery out to try to reset the processor.

If settings like 'avoid motorways' are changed it also hangs.
I think I may have narrowed this problem down to the fact that the mapping needs to recalculate it's bearings before a new destination can be set.
The process takes a long time to recalculate especially if on the move.

All in the device is very slow to respond / feed back information.

I'm not sure how old the design of the device is but think its still available to purchase as its on the Garmin website.

Any feed back/ experience of this device would be good.

**Can I please ask if you can stay on topic and not give feed back on other makes or models of sat nav's as its only this model that is causing me grief 'o_O', and that I'm interested in.
    Thanks.

  2. Is it the red and square unit, sold with the 2010 models - If so, it maybe a Nuvi 510, although I know this and the 220 look the same?

I have never had the problems you describe, but unfortunately have got into a bit of a hole trying to update the European maps. I am still waiting for Garmin to provide a solution.

Try a master reset, although before you do that, download Garmin Express (www.garmin.com\express) and do a backup - this should save all your previously found places/routes etc? For the reset, press and hold the bottom right hand corner of the screen at the same time press and hold the power button, until it asks you if you want to go ahead etc......then it needs to be left under the open sky for 30 minutes.

If it isn't that unit, I have just told you a load of cobblers ;)

  3. For whats it worth, currently operating two older Garmin Zumo 220 (1x Ducati Red AUS+NZ base map / 1x Garmin Grey AUS+NZ base map) with motor vehicles. The two Garmin Zumo 220 work spot on (no map offset issues) reliable and very fast over here in China with Garmin mini SD cards.

Both Garmin Zumo220 running old Garmin software 2.20 version (blanked out Unit ID numbers in pic).

  4. You may need to update your maps, latest euro map is 2014.4 and you need about 4GB of space for the whole of europe. The Ducati branded sat nav has a 4GB micro SD card installed, the units internal memory won't hold the whole european maps you can select the maps for your route using garmin mapinstall.

  5. Thanks for feedback.
It’s defiantly a zumo 220 as when I take the battery out it has a product label stating so. I purchased around April 2012.
Also it was not supplied with a Micro SD card so I purchased on last month in case this was the cause of problem.
The maps were updated a couple of days before I set sail so assume they must have been the latest version ... 2014.40
As for the Position/Screen update speed I have used a Garmin in my car and it was as slow you are past the turn point before it registers. Other devices I have used are much quicker.
Searching around the net there appears to be a fair bit of negative feedback for these devices.
It’s a bit frustrating to use but it has got me about 13K miles round Europe in the last couple of years.
I just feel its not value for money all things considered, at around £400
