Garmin Wired Directly To Battery

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by charlie0749, Jun 27, 2016.

  1. So if my Garmin is wired directly to the battery in its cradle turned off will it take current to charge itself. Don't want a none starting or hard to start morning to worry about. My mind says it won't but doubts are flying around my head.

  2. It will take current. Taking the garmin out when not in use will reduce that drastically, does the cradle have an LED light?

  3. Best bet is to get a relay for a couple of quid and wire that in. That way it only powers with the bike on.

  4. No LED light its the Garmin 340. Taking it out seems the safe bet

  5. Cheers think that's the best option all round

  6. Would not be a problem even if you left it on for a few hours as a GPS uses very little current.

  7. Given that I'll leave messing and just not leave it on overnight when using on the hols
    Thanks all
    Cheers

  8. Would a switch be a better bet, and would it not take current if in the off position? Thinking of doing this for my rear view camera.

  9. If it's switched off but connected, the rechargeable battery would still take current, I'm sure but very little.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  10. A relay takes no power in the off position as the power is cut when it is switched off.

  11. Oops, sorry, I think maybe I didn't read/understand the question properly.
I thought 'off position' was referring to the unit, not a relay or switch. Duhhhh...

  12. I might be wrong too! I just thought he meant the relay.

  13. I was meaning the switch as my camera has no power button. Ordered one now, thanks gents.

  14. Are you asking if a switch would take any power when it is switched off?

  15. The camera more specifically into a switch, but yes.

  16. Isolate it with a switch to be on the safe side. I left my Garmin connected on my R1150R and it drained the battery within a week (big battery at that!).

  17. Think Bob already answered that with the relay answer.

  18. You are asking a very similar question too: "Will the electricity leak out of my wire if I don't tape it up?" ;-)

  19. Agree, if you're wiring a switch you should just wire a relay instead. Much better as you will inevitably forget the switch and park your bike for a week leaving your battery dead.

  20. Ah but the original question was about wiring direct from the battery.
