Hi, I'm Rusty. I bought a 2000 ST2 and lost a tiny spring in the locking gas cap! OMG! I had no idea it was even in there and now I can't lock the cap shut and remove the key. Is it possible to fix this or am I out $200 for a whole new assembly??
Sounds like there is a foreign body (or even the spring) stopping the lock from revolving to the fully 12 o'clock position. The loss of the return spring shouldn't prevent the lock from working, can you get barrel to the 12 o'clock position and remove the key when it's in the hinged up position?
I can operate the key in the lock fine. Its only when I attempt to withdraw the key that it won't allow the key to slide out. It will allow it in the 12 oclock - unlocked position. btw ; I'm going to change my avatar. I look like a smartass with a bad attitude-which is not the case! lol
I'm still not getting this Firstly can you put the key in and take it out at all or is it permanently stuck in? also are you saying that with the lock flap lifted up you can get the key to the 12 o'clock position (as though you had locked the flap down) and remove the key?
I can put the key in and turn it to where its locked in the tank. But in that position, I can't pull it out. So I cant walk away with the key in my hand and the tank cap locked.
I figure the only way I can ride it is if I get a dupe of the key and ride with one key in the gascap and another in the ignition. Or pay $200 to the dealer for a new assembly. Not a great start a newbie!
Sorry rusty but waving the white flag at this point, it's probably me - hopefully another will be along soon.
Well I decided to get aggressive with the problem and ended up taking a file to the business end of the lock mechanism. It turns out that, for whatever reason, the hasp wasn't getting down into the lip of the tank far enough to allow it to slide over and catch. So I shaved off a few millimeters and, voila! I went on my first ride finally today. Perfect weather, teelshirt and around the neighborhood a couple of times. Won't really go out until I am licensed and insured - and, yeah, I need to take a few classes and learn to ride really well. I'll sign up for a full set of classes with Ride Rite or another reputable school. I'm 54 and too old to die stupid. Thanks for your help and advice, though.
