I am having a gearbox problem that's driving me mad still. I have a 2006 999s with 4k miles. Recently purchased. My first drive was short (in the rain and with an under inflated front tyre) and to a mechanic . On the journey, I don't remember issues with the gearbox or clutch but I asked the mechanic to fit an Oberon clutch slave cylinder for lighter gear change and he did. No issues. . I find that the gearbox 'bangs' into first (ie its not seamless as it used to be on previous bikes) but also up into second or third and fourth and even sometimes similar on the way down the gear change. He swapped out the clutch plates for another set on test - no difference He replaced some slightly warped plates - no difference He replaced aftermarket slave cylinder with original - made it worse! I cleaned out clutch basket and plates throughout - no effect. System was bled - no effect. There is full fluid, no clutch slipping and no leaks. Mechanic (who specialises in Ducati) thinks it might be gear selector forks wear. Previous owner going up and down the box without clutch. Its going to cost me €1,000 to get the gearbox out plus gear selector part costs if that's the issue, but right now we are not sure if it is! Anyone had this problem? Any advice appreciated...or €1,000 if you have it lying around....! Many thanks Garret
When you say 'slightly warped', there is one plain steel plate in there which should be dished. It sounds to me like it needs bleeding after the fitment of the new slave as the problem didn't exist before he changed it. If this 'specialist' is just replacing all the parts one by one (I hope he's not charging you for this) then I'd go somewhere else.
Check the chain as sometimes a loose chain can some times make the clonk in to gear appear a lot worse. Also did he bleed the clutch at the master cylinder as well. There is a bleed nipple inside the reservoir, you wont believe the amount of air that can get stuck in there.
Many thanks, my problem is that I am unsure if it was there or not before the replacement part was installed. There was no charge for the test work and the system was bled and the original slave cylinder re-installed just in case the Oberon part was at fault. G
Has the clutch system been bled at the master cylinder as well as at the slave? The banging is usually caused by clutch drag....
Straight and bearings are fine too. The master cylinder was bled thoroughly and neutral is easy to select any time. The clutch itself is behaving perfectly with bite and no drag apparent. I do not want to mess with the gearbox if I can avoid it but while the bike is drive-able and there are no alien bits in sump magnet suggesting serious issues, the problem is just wrecking my head!
Try taking your bike out again. This time change gear (going up)without the clutch, see if the problem persists. If so,then its not the clutch.Just a thought.
Good secondhand engine swap would be cheaper than a gearbox rebuild & labour? Old out, new in - done!
P.s. have you tried back bleeding the slave pushing fluild back up through the system from the bottom with a 60ml syringe?
