1199 Gear Sensor

  1. hi guys
started yesterday, gear box showing (-) and big red warning coming up across the screen - GEAR SENSOR , but then going back to normal , then back to bad again.
    anyone had it happened?
big question is: my bike going back for the service in 2 months anyway , can i wait/ does this gear sensor is purely for gear indicator on the dash only or would it confuse the bike ? can i limp for 2 months or not?
    bike used daily

  2. Don't quote me but I think it could cause issues. I've read of it causing strange throttle and engine brake issues due to the bike thinking the bike is in nuetral and not doing x mph

  3. OK, got it booked in with the dealer for end of July . also remembered that i have had gear sensor replaced once under warranty 18 months ago, so this is second time it happened to me. bloody glad i have extended warranty!
dealer recon i can ride it mean time no problem?

  4. I had it replaced on my 899 twice, had no probs riding it in between, except having to hold the clutch in to start it. That is just my experience, if you have any doubts , don't ride it.

  5. I replaced my gear sensor on my 1199 2 weeks ago after it lost sync with the gear box, and went from showing the correct gear to randomly showing the number 1-6 or just "-". Got Gear Sensor error on the display and then BBS came up and DTC also went to "-". The bike felt a little uneven on throttle and engine braking, but that can easily just be me being oversensitive to the bike when the bike came up with errors and no DTC. Otherwise the bike rode fine.

The dealer tried resetting the sensor, but it was dead, so got a new one, changed it myself in around 15mins (just unscrew it from the block and unplug it from the harness under the right electronics holder and the reattach new one)

With the new one in it displayed "C" and then the dealer just calibrated it through the DDS software in 2mins and back to normal operations :)

  6. yes, ive got my bike booked in with the dealer. bike deffo feels uneven on the gears and engine breaking. whats interesting now and again sensor comes back to life and behaving OK for a little while but still pain as i have to keep clutch in while at the light - otherwise it can cut out any time if gear sensor warning come up again.
basically monumental paint in the arse

  7. Were you out in the rain? Mine went funny in the rain, dealer reset it, went funny again on the way home. Cleaned and dried the connector and put a little grease around it and no issues since. Dealer checked it again at the last service and no codes stored.

  8. cant remember, but i commute on the bike, so chances are it was raining at some point.
where is the connector? ive no idea

  9. It's behind the right hand fairing panel. You can follow the wire from gear sensor on top of the box near the right foot peg.

  10. Guys my input on this, had the EML on, intermittent 1n2 showing up despite being in 6th, rode like an absolute pig at slow speeds, it was fine above 50. Tried allsorts as recommended on here. £147 for a new one. Just plug & play - it was fine & dandy. Sensor failure.
