Gear Shaft End Float: Ideal Gap?

  1. Gear shaft End Float Question
    ..................................................
Ready to split cases and when measuring end float I found no measurable float on the output shaft.

The input gear shaft is at 0.127mm, close to the limit of 0.15mm; however no detectable or measurable float though on the output gear shaft.

Q.1. I suppose I should ensure a smaller input shaft gap when re-assembling. What would be ideal, 0.07mm, perhaps? (Haynes doesn't give a factory setting, so far as I can see).

Q.2 Any Advice on the output shaft - which may have been set at immeasurably close to zero? Is that a good idea for the input shaft?

Q.3 I don't believe an end float gap usually gets much larger in use, or shouldn't normally, other than a minimal 'settling in'; But, perhaps in practise the input shaft float is prone to widening with dry clutch action?

    Specific Motor: 900ss 1992

  2. Chuee,
At the same point as you (with same bike) I got these from youtube - Andy motorcycle obsession and some other reading. This is what I am going for.

    Crank 0.1 - 0.15 pre old bearings
    Output 0.05 - 0.15 clear
    Clutch input 0.05 - 0.15 clear
Drum upto 0.4 clear say 0.2

Not that it affects it but I am putting a gasket in not 3 bond.

Would welcome comment if I am way off.
    Cheers Gaz

  3. Appreciated Gaz. Mighty useful.

I'll be rebuilding the motor over the next couple of weeks, and a bit more.
I've decided not to rush things in a day regarding inspection of bearings, their order and installation, as this is first Ducati bottom end rebuild, and want to make it all good, and with few re-orders. Also, painting and what not, compression ratio measurements to do, with possible adjustments to chamber volume to make; a little port cleaning up too would be nice.

I found my mains (both) were mashed up as some (body or twat) had dropped an alternator woodruff in the engine; People rushing with their eyes half shut and cack-handed.
Half of the length of w.key survived, and lay in the sump. Fortunately it didnt get to damage the big end journal.

If you want to bang heads together, you're welcome; PM me at any time as you go, or get me on Telegram ( i can send you my channel via pm) if you like, for instant messaging.
    John
