General Cleaning

  1. Could I ask what people use to clean there bikes with and the process. May sound silly but I've got a 2013 multi which was treated with acf50 in first week of buying it with all year biker and when only cleaned with cold water from hose to rinse dirt off and then in summer I've cleaned it using muc off and rinsed off with hosepipe and degreaser around chain and other areas.

Now getting to the point I noticed that some point over winter that there was corrosion on chain, rear wheel nuts and the sprocket bolts that look aweful. The bike had done 2000 miles and I've probably looked after it more than any other bike I've owned

Bike has just been for first annual service and I raised the corrosion for a claim to essentially be told that because there were more bolts and parts that were suffering corrosion then the dealer wouldn't claim as Ducati wouldn't pay out and suggested that something I had done had caused it and that it was the muc off. I'm personally not convinced as I dilute the muc off.

Has anyone had any similar experiences with muc off and corrosion or am I being fobbed off

  2. Example of what has happened

  3. Muc off is a very strong alkali and should be used carefully, sparingly and following the instructions.

Always apply it to a wet surface, wash it all off with lots of water and never allow it to dry on any surface, it leaves a surface clean but totally unprotected.

I have started using FS365 after washing which dries leaving a thin protective film of oil.

  4. I've diluted most of the time but once or twice when filthy it's been sprayed directly on but washed it off after about 10 mins max after using a long brush to agitate Dirt, rinsed using hoespipe.

I just can't believe it's the muc off as I've tried to not leave it on too long. Are you aware of anyone experience the same or do you think I should have pressed harder for a claim

  5. Oh also after washing I spray muc off bike spray all over as well to disperse water

  6. not made to be used in the wet, these Ducatis

  7. I can't believe you hadn't spotted this earlier regardless of the cause, I've used muc off neat applied to a wet bike without issue so I doubt it was that.

  8. I'd be more worried about that chain :Wideyed:

    • Agree Agree x 1
  9. Freak - I'm not being dramatic when I say it happened virtually overnight. It was fine at first oil service rode it home and got a bit wet and dried it off with towel a little and then put it in the garage and didn't use for two days and then was like the pics.

I'll have that muc off isn't great but don't expect It to go like this. Dissapointed to say the least And at dealers reasonse. Has really put me off idea of another Ducati

  10. You say you rode it home and it got a bit wet, would this be on salted roads by any chance?

  11. I don't do all weather riding(so not a mucky bike) but i have never used a hose pipe or jet washer to clean a bike just a bit of jizer etc and soapy water with a damp cloth and then spray with chain lube.

Psallis you fasteners look very bad but looking at all the materials used in the chain sprocket carrier etc and i don't get the chain is looking so bad, i would say its what you are using is making it worse, i know all bikes are made with cheap fasteners but that went bad very fast, is your garage damp.

    Shame the dealer can't help.

  12. Peter - no don't think so as it was September time I think and was pretty mild

Road trip - garage is a little damp but not majorly. Thing is I cleaned my 999s, r1150gs and zx6r the same way with muc off and had no issues.

Dealer suggested I'd go through some sort of pesticde or similar from a farm as exup valve was many as well as other bolts

  13. Looks more like acid rain.
Well i scratch my head then, if riding all year i wouldn't replace any nuts and bolts until you sell it not ideal but what else can you do if Ducati are not interested but replace the chain as it looks more than a bit of surface rust.

  14. I haven't got a clue either. It's on pcp scheme snd will be traded in next sept I think but not sure if I'll go ducati again after this and really not sure about going to same dealer. I think the answer of because we don't know what's done it and there's lots of bit corroded it's not a manufacturing fault and therefore no warrenty os a bit naff.

Wondering about seeing what another dealer says or emailing Ducatii direct

  15. ACF50 is the stuff to use but you have to apply it properly to a clean surface.
Chain maintenance is another thing altogether as you are lubricating rather than just putting a protective coat onto the metal parts...
SDOC100 to clean it, then seal it with ACF50 - ideally with a really fine spray but applied with a brush works too if you can get at all the places you need to.
You can ride around most of the winter with the bike looking like crap but when you wash it off properly it should be as good as the previous summer..

  16. Same thing happened to me and a friend when using All Year Biker. Which locality are you in? I'm in Glos and the guy we used was from Worcs.

  17. Mac in Lancashire. Could I ask exactly what happened to yours and what bike

  18. Multi S Touring Skyhook. Same as yours. My mate's Kwak 1400GTR too.

  19. I never leave Muc off on my bike for more than two minutes, the corrosion looks just like the work of salt and my guess is that the damage is caused by the Muc off being too strong and on too long. Nothing to do with Ducati but plated fixings are not able to resist such strong chemical attack. Personally I'd leave it till spring and replace with stainless except where torque values are high, such as calipers, then I'd use Gr 8.8 or higher BZP plated fixings from a nut and bolt place.

    Just my opinion

  20. Special fixings can be re-plated if you find a local place, likely to take a few days and be a minimum charge.
