Germany/austria Trip - Good Hotels?

Discussion in 'Touring' started by Majvs, Feb 6, 2016.

  1. We'll be travelling down to Berchtesgaden in Bavaria in July and using that as a base for a few days to explore the area (Grossglockner etc).
Has anyone got a recommendation for a bike friendly hotel in or around Berchtesgaden?

We'll be using the overnight ferry to Rotterdam then taking 3 days to get down there. So if anyone has any recommendations for hotels en route it would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

  2. I've used Gilberts Hotel in Otterbach a few times on route as I find it a good location geographically, It's changed hands and is now the Hotel Lautertal, Otterbach.

It is cheap but all you need for a good stopover; good beer and food, clean comfortable rooms. Had a great night in there once on my own; Germany were playing an international football game it was a fantastic party night.

  3. Great part of the world. I have been in that area a few times (mainly the Tirol) and visited Berchtesgaden etc.
Unfortunately I have always travelled from the West so can't advise of Hotels en route aside from trying Bike Stay:
BIKE STAY EUROPE: Motorcycle Friendly Accommodation and European Motorbike Touring Advice within Europe
Try to pick ones that are more bike specific / specialist as a few are just happy to accept bikers but have nothing special to offer.
If you have chance you could always pay a visit to Pompone near Monte Grappa ( Pompone, il club della moto italiana: Aprilia, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Moto Morini, MV Agusta - Pompone Italia ) for all things Ducati and a friendly welcome and good food. It is about 6 hours away from that area.
Most of the big lakes have the scenic wow factors (eg Achensee) and the passes are fairly deec although traffic can be a pain - even on a bike...

  4. I've never used bike specific hotels and I don't think there's any need in Europe. On your route, I've used the Hotel Heiligenstein at Baden-Baden, which is nice, but no good for seeing the town, as in the outskirts (rather oddly in what looks like a housing estate). This is an easy day run from Rotterdam, as I did this the other way, on the way back. Also used the Hotel Oberland in Triesenburg (Liechtenstein), which is Alpine Pub-like and pleasant.

Happy to recommend either of these, but hotels can be down to personal taste.
