899 Getting The Suspension Right

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by redders, Jun 5, 2014.

  1. I feel the suspension is a bit hard on my 899. I'm approx 10 stone, and I find myself getting launched out of the seat quite a lot when the road is bumpy.

I've never tinkered with suspension settings before - mainly because my last bike didn't have much adjustment possible. I thought I'd be able to get into it nice and easily on the 899 because the adjusters are easy to get to.

When I bought it, the dealer pointed out all the adjustments then said "don't touch them if you don't know what you're doing".

So, I intend to promptly ignore that advice, and tweak it a bit. But I am here for advice. I have heard the starting point is getting the preload right. What is the easiest way to do this?

After that what's the best thing to do? Anyone have a tried and tested methodology that works for them?

Sorry for the completely clueless questions. I really am a newbie.

  2. Hi, if it's for the roads I think... I left my spring rates the same (as this is a big change), but I took a turn of rear compression damping off, and 0.5 turn of front and my 848 is okay for the roads we ride on around Swindon/Avebury/Wantage. I am 14stone though so I would suggest a blast down to see JHS in Bristol and get them to do a set up for £40 as your bike will likely need the pre-load changing.

Generally though, the rule is just to tweak one thing at a time.
