Bought a Givi XS306 and the locking ring for the 848 a while ago. Used it for the first time on the Isle of Man trip a week or so back. As the bike is sporty I set the bag to be as far forward as possible given the riding position.... Verdict on first use: Hopeless and blooming dangerous! On the way up the bag was pretty full (well 3/4) and 3 times at 70 mile an hour it came unlocked! First time I stopped just before the M27 whilst holding it in my left hand. Second and third times (M42 then M62) I managed to clip it back on.... Coming back it was a lot less packed and did not come off once. Emailed Givi a week ago, no response as yet...
I've had the same problem with a Bags Connection Quick-Lock EVO tank bag, using the large Trail bag. When the tank bag has been full it has come lose on half a dozen occasions. I've not had the problem with the smaller Daypack tank bag. I'm thinking it's a combination of weight and pressure on the back of the bag.
I just ordered the Kreiga adapter that allows you to use their US range as tank bags. Their stuff sure isn't cheap but I already have a 30 l rucksack, a US10 & an R3 bumbag all of which are brilliant once it's on I'll post up some pics. Here are the instructions and as its getting installed on an 848 I'm pretty confident its going to work
Let us know how it fits when you get it jock. I've never had to carry luggage on the bike but I'm off to the tt next year and going to have to get something bought. I was looking at the Krista range and it does look pretty good so will be good to hear what you think of it.
Brog I reckon Kreiga is the dogs, I'm only using the tank for a 10l US pack so it won't be much use for serious luggage however the tail packs can take a 30 and 2x10s on the back. I reckon that I wouldn't want any more than a 20l US on the tank the 30 would probably be dangerous. I've used the R30 rucksack before on a day out and it was brilliant you wouldn't know you had it on when on the bike, only downside for me with Kreiga is the cost. You Tube have videos of a lot of the stuff and there website is also worth a look Anyway the tank adapter arrived this morning and I'll probably install it this afternoon and then post up some pics. John
I use a us5 on the tank, I found the us10 a bit too big on the tank whilst riding, I used the metal clips/loop combination to keep it in place and it comes on and off quick
I need to post some pics apologies. I fitted it yesterday and it was a ball ache, putting on the rear bit under the seat with the Velcro was the easy bit. At the steering head all the bloody plastic made it a bit of a nightmare. I eventually pulled out the CF keyguard & then the OEM Keyguard to get access to the tubes to feed the straps round. WARNING - not a job for the sausage fingered. I also installed as per the video and just could not get the straps to fit against the tank properly, probably just me. What I eventually did was fed the loops through from the fairing side, as opposed to the straps, so as the loop was nearest the tank and then fed the strap through them. Much better!! I really like it. Seems very secure, yet easy to remove the bag, easy to unclip/re-clip the bag, and it should be dawdle at fuel stops with the quick release at the rear and tip the bag forward. Going out today so I'll report back on how I get on with the US 10, it looks fine to me but the proof is in the riding I guess. John
So I promised some foties So first the Tank system The Tank installed errr............on the tank Tank with the Al buckles attached these then clip to the US series of bags US10 in position Bag lifted using quick release buckles for filling the tank (very easy) Next the Tail straps, these were a bit of a fiddle to install too and could probably do with more fine tuning yet Tail loops installed under passenger seat blank, these stay in position all the time (unless you remove the straps of course) Alloy Hooks attached to loops ready for US bag install (the bag just clips on) Finally bag in place (I couldn't be arsed tidying away the straps as it was just trial) Overall once installed it should be fairly simple and its well thought out. Although the "How To's" videos are accurate they don't really reflect the amount of faff to get it all in place. That said once on, very easy to take the bag(s) and swap between tail and tank. My only concern is these alloy buckles might flail on an empty bag and possibly mark paintwork, I have Venture Shield applied so it should be fine. Once the bag is loaded the clips will pull higher and the risk of them flailing should be eliminated. Hope that helps somebody. I got a little bit of video of me on the bike with the bag on the tank on the move and I'll try to post that up via You Tube when I edit a bit if it will assist anybody John
