I left the Army last september and immediately flew to Afghan to take up a civilian job speaking Pashto. I have been here since then, and went home for the first time last week. Now that I have been home I want to go back home again for good. I have had a new daughter introduced to the world in my absence, who I have now met and she's a real gem and my family really need me to be home again. So my question is this... how the hell can I find a job in andyb's real world? I have literally no clue what to do or where to look. I have quals in fabrication so I can make things out of metal, but I got my ticket in 2008 and I haven't done any fabrication since then. I am studying for a degree, but I don't have a degree right now. I can speak another language but it's not useful in the UK. I can run, jump, shoot, read a map, follow orders and iron really nice creases in shirt sleeves. None of this is particularly useful. Any ideas? I live near Amesbury, Wiltshire if you know any one that might take me on.
Self employed Fitness trainer plus nutritionist , got to be convincing enough for the punters being ex army.
My neighbour. Ex 40 commando. (nut job but nice bloke) he is currently doing security work in Libya but was on the tankers in the gulf etc doing anti piracy. Month on month off basis.
Pashto is a good language to have depending on your work. There is still a need in the UK in certain fields. How far are you willing to travel Tom, and if it's not a rude question, what do you need to earn? Quality of life is something a big pay cheque can't buy
To be honest I have had my eyes opened. It's not about the money, it's about my family. I don't want to judge my success in life by my effectiveness as a consumer but by the happiness I can put in to my children's lives. By being away I'm only bringing them sadness and all the money I have made doesn't help them one little bit in real terms. Turns out having your dad around is beyond monetary value. I would need to earn at least 25k to get by, but even that may be out of reach. As far as travel goes, the whole family could re-locate depending on the opportunities available.
... just at the moment. They want many and varied languages, plus the ability to master new ones. Just a suggestion!
Pashto is also very useful! I gave up what I considered to be the best job in the world to be with the family. Money can't buy the quality time I now have at home. I still work in a very interesting field but with steady hours. I spent 6 years on two hour standby, and worked different hours every day, not knowing if I'd be home the same day when I walked out the door. How my wife put up with it I'll never know. I'll make some enquiries for you and PM you any leads.
Not being home for a few days is fine with me, but I've been out the house for 5 months with no prospect of coming home. I only went back as my daughter had an operation and I needed to be there. I need to be home most of the time and away some of the time, rather than away all the time and home some of the time.
Job Details its a start…..then you could get at the internal vacancies…I've seen front office staff end up as fleet managers and all sorts,,
What about customs and excise. My mate came out of the navy and went there....been there for the last 20 years...
GCHQ and the like are often advertising for linguists and your forces background would be a positive for them as well
