Go-pro Hero 4 Black Set Up ?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Mikey G, Sep 21, 2016.

  1. can anyone suggest the best setting for a Go-Pro , I want to fix it to the bike to do a few rides out .
    Cheers

  2. "Best" depends on what you want to do with the footage, if you want to edit it, and what you have to store/edit it on. Personally I have mine set on 1080 at 60fps. Seems to give enough clarity and doesn't overload my laptop (which cannot cope with 4K).

  3. yeah Jolly ...I want to edit it add music maybe ...ive bought a new laptop that should cope with 4k ..but we will see lol

  4. My laptop isn't exactly slack, but it really struggles. Also, because I don't use it for anything professional and upload to YouTube to share (which further reduces image quality), I can't see the point in doing anything above 1080 because it would not change my final output and just creates storage and editing hassles.

  5. I had to build a new desktop with an 8 core CPU and 24Gb of Ram to render 1080 60fps videos taken with a gopro, before that I used to start rendering a video late evening and hope that it was finished in the morning!

  6. As per my experience the best setting when riding my bike is 1080 superview between 30-60fps(all depends if you plan to use slow motion)

  7. 1080p 60 fps is all you'll need, 4K creates all manner of issues! You won't tell the difference on YouTube and Vimeo either as the uploads are compressed.

  8. Totally in agreement. The attached was 1080/60 and if you watch it on the laptop it is stunning. YouTube compresses it so that it looses a lot of sharpness, but is still pretty good (excuse the pace, I'd only picked it up 10 days before)...

Also, 1080 is good enough for grabbing some decent quality photos from as well (it was a gloomy day at Donnington, but you get the idea) IMG_0439.JPG

  9. I need to start trying 1080. I use the next setting up and the quality is not as good as yours @Jolley . 4k is a waste of time as it can't keep up with all the movement but I think I'm getting the same on the next setting as well.

  10. Unless you're producing a professional video/film, 1080/60 gives all the clarity and frame rate you need. I've never had any problems with it jumping or skipping, and the file sizes are just about manageable.

  11. thanks gents , just off for a wet ride out ....will try all you've suggested

  12. can you go pro buffs now recommend a cheap/free editing software ?

  13. The GoPro Studio was always free, and works! I suppose it depends what you want to do? You can view/trim/splice/fade and it will compress the saved format to save on disc space (I.e. they have a YouTube compression they say gives the best quality for uploading there, but reduces the file size to Less than 1/2 of what it was).

  14. GoPro studio is pretty good, thats what I use nearly all the time. If I want to do something more shiny then I use Apple Movies.

  15. i do use Gopro Studio ..just wandered if there was anything better out there ...
cheers ...will take a look at apple movies and see what it does ...

  16. Anything free will be much of a muchness for the non pro user. Final cut and other stuff is leagues ahead.
In my experience, spending the time learning some tricks on gp studio pays dividends e.g Youtube tutorials, except there are some I still cant do : unamused: Just get used to one and it's a doddle.

+1 on the 4k thing, you wont need it. Unless you:re doing something like this:

  17. Agree. Many professionals use 4K for the flexibility it offers in the edit (punching in, adding camera moves, stabilising footage etc), not necessarily for the quality of the footage. But that requires special software and the right setup to handle 4K.

If you want to use 4K on an older machine, you could look into external RAID drives to speed up media file handling. But it will still be much slower.
