Go Pro Hero4 Silver

  1. Morning guys and gals , the annual anniversary of my birth is looming , and I've asked for a mountable camera for day to day use in my van and bike rides out , I've looked at a few but can't seem to settle on one , go pro silver is top of the list ATM , unless you know different ... Around £250 is cool ....

  2. Good choice I haven't used the Drift but it also seems very popular, hoses for courses

I'd look at some YouTube comparisons, turn the settings to as high as YouTube allows, although even then YouTube still compresses, so any differences in YouTube (for or against) will be magnified when watching straight out the camera. There are no rights and wrongs

I have a 3+ and it captures great footage, although the camera is bulky compared to the Drift.

If you do go the GoPro route apart from their own mounts you can get converters on E-Bay cheaply that got to 1/4 UNC thread mounts, which is the universal tripod mount for cameras etc:

Lots and lots of info on here, do a search and you'll be swamped with info

  3. Cheers Old Jock , yeah there is no shortage of information ...which is why I'd ask for those who have used them for some feedback , so thank you for yours ... Will also look at a smaller light weight helmet cam too
    .

  4. If your looking at mounting the cam on the bike the GoPro IMHO is fine, lots of mounts available but it is a bit of a plastic box.

If your wanting to mount on a helmet then the GoPro is not such a good choice.

It also depends on what quality you want to record at and you better have a reasonably quick PC if you are going to view at higher resolutions.

Battery life may also be an issue. Typically a GoPro will last 45mins to an hour, my experience is generally an hours recording time. I think the Drift is considerably better, but as I've never used one I have no first hand experience.

I still think GoPro gives the best quality, you look at anything on the box where they want a viewer's eye perspective and its always GoPros that are strapped to the contestants/victims etc: These are the pros so they are in the know

Here's a wee vid forward view is shit as I was experimenting with mounts, on the Guzzi, if it helps. Forward view with a GoPro 3, Side view with 3+ and rear with an old Contour. You can easily see the quality difference and I expect the 4 will be even better again. Vid is nothing exciting, my riding is pants. I never made it with the intention of putting it on the Interweb.

  5. Look awesome , what mount did u use for the front mounted ? And what editing package ?

  6. It always makes me chuckle to myself when I see a GoPro strapped on a helmet or a bike! A big square sail, totally un-aerodynamic. On a push bike or hanglider I can understand, but for motorbikes it has to be Drift, it is just plain common-sense? Jon.

  7. It's a valid point but I'm not so rich as to have a dedicated cam for motorcycle only. I use mine for other stuff as well, there are no rights and wrong, well IMHO

The view forward was using a chest strap, its too low so looks shit. Next time I'm going to mount it on the fairing, headlamp or steering head
The side and rear views used an adapter to 1/4 UNC then used clamps, mounted onto the barends

It was edited in Hit Film, buts that just because I have that package, its too expensive unless you do other things with it. Adobe Elements or another cheap package would have worked just as well.

Music was edited to length using Audacity, which is a great little Audio editing package for free

  8. It is my birthday in a few weeks too but my wife bought me an 848 from 2010. I have a couple of Gopros, a 3 black and a 3+ black. Mounting them on my BMW K100RS is good and stable, on my Ducati ST2 produces loads of vibration and not tried them on the 848 yet. I have tons of different mounts, bought and made, but mounting on the body (chest mount) gives the best vibration resistance on the ST2.
I am going to make a mount so that it fits just in front of my right shoulder which should work out fine.

  9. Thought there must have been something new looming, can't imagine they used the normal hero4 for moto gp ha. Looks good!
