Good places to advertise when you are selling a bike?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Tedward, Feb 27, 2013.

  1. My monster 1100 is for sale on here (of course), but has anyone got any experience of advertising their bikes on mcn, biketrader, ebay etc? I am wondering where I should put it. Any ideas appreciated.

    Thanks,

  2. Ebay has worked for me a couple of times. Sure you may get chancers but you can ignore them

  3. Yeah, I sold my old bike on ebay, no reserve, starting at £1.00. It went really well. Just don't want to let it go for a steal - I don't reckon classifieds get good interest on ebay, but auction seems like a good plan.

  4. Other thing is - bikes on MCN are advertised quite high... mine has higher than average mileage but so much kit with it, and I can undercut all of those adverts pretty significantly. So might be worth looking at.

  5. Just start the auction at you lowest price, the if t doesnt sell you wouldnt have let it go anyway. And if someone sends a cheeky offer, you will still have the choice to sell or now

  6. Ok cool, will give it a week then get it up there. Don't think there's much risk of it going for less than 4500 - after having a good look around. Thanks mate!

  7. You could always try the forums classified section. Bike Trader/ebay/mcn are all good places really

  8. I sell plenty of cars via ebay and always do ok.

  9. You can post the sale in UKMOC if you are a member

EBay has worked for me in the past - less so AutoTrader

  10. I sold my previous bikes via forums or eBay. MCN and Autotrader are too pricy IMHO. You can also try gumtree and pistonheads as they are free and quite popular.

  11. I recently sold my GSXR and had this same quandry to deal with. My findings were:-

    1. Bike Trader was useless and expensive.
    2. Gumtree got zero interest at all.
    3.Pistonheads got zero interest.
    4. eBay got me loads of stupid (deliberately so) offers.
    5. eBay got a lot of interest and watchers but no buyers until it was listed for the 3rd time at a much reduced price.
    6. I got zero interest in it with the race can etc. attached so I took the bits off and sold them, relisted as standard for less and it sold within a week.

I never tried MCN. Tried on forums and noticeboards etc. too but eBay was the best way after all. I listed it as a classified with a best offer. Auction may be better for a quicker sale but what I did find out was that it was all down to price. I saw loads on for up to £1k more than mine but mine didn't spark serious interest until I dropped the price by a fair way. I was selling in October / November time though.

Best of luck with it. Try and be patient. I lost the will to live with it at times and the sheer stupidity of some of the "offers" and questions you may get will piss you off badly, but it's how it is I suppose.

  12. Pistonheads didn't list properly and all the support response I got was 'it's not free now' even though the Ts&Cs state otherwise
Preloved got some response but unless members pay, they can't respond for a week.

I was reluctant to put on eBay but went for a basic classified ad, got the usual idiotic stuff but also a lot of good interest - cheaper than auto/bike trader and ad is on for longer. Just make sure you do as cash etc rather than PayPal otherwise they'll sting you for that fee.

  13. Ok thanks for all this. Sounds interesting, particularly about returning it to standard trim. What do you think the touring kit, termis, tail tidy would be worth standalone? Will leave in the alarm and tracker - but because I have all the original stuff I can do it quite easily. Might be a better way.

Sounds like ebay might work. Has anyone just tried a straight auction rather than classifieds?

  14. If you can be bothered, traditionally you will get more as std and sell extras separately. Extras will likely attract more but wont really get more money than a good std bike imo

  15. Thanks for all the advice. Sold the monster, and bought a bonneville - a T100, with the full race exhausts (arrows). Is slower for sure, but lighter, more comfortable, and seems weirdly more flickable (bear in mind I am not an experienced rider). Going to keep it and then look for a 748/749 in June as a second bike. Works well in town so far!

On another note will have monster 1100 standard exhaust for sale, full touring gear including ducati tank bag and rack with ventura bag, paddock stand, original tail (sold it with the tail tidy on), and back protector (ducati-dainese one, never opened!). If anyone fancies them let me know.

Thanks again for the info and i'm sure before long i'll return to the Ducati fold, one way or another!
