Sadly my Streetfighter 1098S has a problem with 4th gear: it still pulls but has a horrible rattle that suggests it’s lost one of its teeth. It still runs fine and all the other gears are OK. I spoke to Baines Racing today and they reckon it could take 20 plus hours in labour, plus numerous parts in addition to the gear itself (if indeed that’s what it is) such as head gaskets, oils seals, etc. Ultimately I’m looking at a three grand bill to fix it if I go down that route. Another option is to buy a secondhand engine, which I’m loath to do in some respects as mine’s cosmetically immaculate and has only done 17k miles. The cheapest one I can find is about £1.3k, plus of course the labour to swap it out and then carry out a full service…so a two grand bill. Another option is to try and sell the bike as it is right now. I suppose on a good day before the gearbox issue it would’ve been worth what, £6.5k? Maybe I can find someone who has the wherewithal to repair it and would pay say £3k for it. Anyone got any ideas/recommendations? This was supposed to be a keeper, a mint piece of exotica to ride, love and enjoy owning. To say I’m gutted is an understatement! Cheers
No ideas or recommendations, just commiserations mate. Tough break but I hope you find a solution that doesn't cost a leg & an arm.
I wouldn't pay 3K without knowing what's what inside that engine. Those broken bits could have caused all manner of damage. As a bike it's worth practically nothing. Parting it out is probably the easiest and best way to recoup some money. This is just my opinion.
Due to its location in the engine, investigating the fault in detail will take hours of labour in itself. At the moment I think it’s looking most like buying a secondhand engine and getting it swapped out. Anything cosmetically better on the current engine can be put on the replacement one, plus it can have a full desmo service on the bench before it goes in. I can also then sell the old engine for maybe a few hundred quid. Parting it out is another thing I’ve thought about, but with 1-year-old twins my spare time is non-existent. I’d never get round to it. And finally the option of selling it as-is. Thinking about that too but I don t know if it’s the kind of thing someone would risk. I can’t believe a bike with a FDSH and only 17k miles would shit itself so monumentally. Thanks all.
..it could still be a keeper, put it down to experience and uprate the gearset while you are at it. Controversial but 1098/1198 definitely benefit from this (imo). Choice of two - BSD slightly favoured overall:- https://bsd.uk.com/tag/heavy-duty-bsd-gearbox/ https://novaracing.co.uk/ducati
In this situation I think I would… drop the oil, clean out anything from the coarse strainer, new filter, new oil, and… ride it. Double shift between third and fifth up and down the box. See how it goes. You might even start to enjoy it. It’s unlikely to reduce the value of the bike you have now and unlikely to explode the rest of the box.
Sorry to here about the bike, but can i ask...did you have a quick shifter fitted? I was told not to put one on my 1098 as it would kill the gearbox. ( can't remember who told me)
I haven’t seen a SF 1098S as low as £6.5 for quite some time, they went up in asking price when the updated SF was released. What is it going to cost to change to another motorcycle against keeping this keeper. I’d be looking at replacing either the whole engine or repairing what you have or as an extreme IMO just ride it as Jon stated earlier.
Maybe sling an 1198 motor in there. Otherwise may be as cheap/easy to put new box like the nova one Chris I think calls out above, but could still be looking at 3-5k… do you need the bike? If not, could always stick to the back of the garage and do later when more funds seem available. If you’re after selling, breaking is the way to go imho. Suspension and wheels will be decent sum
Give Carl Harrison a call (01379 852020). He doesn't charge an arm or even a leg and might be able to save you from replacing the engine (assuming the damage is limited to that single gear). In the first instance, as others have said, drop the oil and see what lurks inside. If half your gearbox exits the drain point with it, then you might want evaluate your choices. If not then it may well be worth repairiing.
Sell it to "we buy any bike" https://webuyanybike.com/?utm_sourc...TozKFKRSG0gFL6NYDEi_Z4R5yOru8WABoCTRoQAvD_BwE Worth a try ? No need to mention anything , the are " professional steelers " lol
With the right info and if you are that way inclined its just a matter of slowly working your way through it. Loads of info available online and whilst you might need the odd Ducati tool with patience most people can do it.
did my 996 gearbox after i lost the output bearing on a track day.. i think it was 1900 euros but i used a second hand but inspected gearbox cluster, that was 250 for the set. its hard choice repair and keep or replace the motor and have a potential issue on first start up.. i decided to go down the repair option as it had less variables to the decision.
