Well, my 999 is still off the road and at the doctor's. The doctor is having great difficulty with finding its intermittent fault, resulting in loss of power, difficulty starting and prone to stalling. He's had the head off and reseated all valves. Diagnostics can't tell him anything. He's swapped out the tank, the injectors and spent an age fiddling and looking and mechanicking. Now he things it's a problem in the loom somewhere, but he hasn't got a spare to replace mine, so that needs to be found. A new one is second-mortgage money. So has anyone got a spare kicking around they would sell? Bike is a 2005 999 - the black swingarm version (photos on my profile somewhere). Does anyone know what they might cost second hand, if I have to resort to EvilBay? Cheers.
It sounds like your doctor doesn't have a clue, have you considered a different doctor ? Was a compression test done before whipping of the head and reseating the valves ?
Yes, I could see that it might look like that, but not so. I've been going to that doctor for over 20 years, with a hiatus when he "retired" which is when the problems began. Fortunately, he is out of retirement for friends. He won several Swiss Superbike championships with Ducati - motors direct from Bologna - against far more monied competition. What he doesn't know about Ducatis isn't worth knowing. First thing he did was a compression test, which led to him removing the heads and redoing the valves - they'd never been adjusted by the other garage I had to go to. I know he will find the problem, but he admitted he's never seen anything like it in his entire career. Fortunately, he's not billing me all his time, but then I can't ask him to hurry either. He's offered me a Moto Morini to ride around on till the end of the month, which is nice of him, so I'll probably go and fetch it. Should be fun and interesting.
You will need to look at the connector for the front/main loom. If it's a square black push together one, it's from a late bike. A round black/orange screw on connector is from an earlier model. I have seen earlier types on late bikes though. Below is the later type plug
I have spare front loom but the headlight connectors have been messed with. It has round connector. You are welcome to borrow for diagnosis.
Mine was just stalling, none of the other symptoms as listed above. JHS Racing, Bristol had simply failed to set the TPS and fuelling before they attempted to mask that with a power commander.
Many thanks for this offer. I have communicated it, via voicemail, to the Ducati doctor, so I hope he will tell me what he needs. Very kind and appreciated. I'll be back to you via PM if borrowing your loom looks like a good plan for him.
mmm, bit of a nite mare,,,,,, but me thinks,, electronics being what they re now adays a decent mechy should have access to sparkeymagig and be able to check oms volts watts impedence ( cool eh ? ) etc whatever in the wiring loom, without replacing the hole bloody thing ! ,, good luck mate,,, or take it to Fin ( mac )..... old skool......
