999 Gps Mounting - Where And How: Any Thoughts?

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by mileypau, Dec 8, 2014.

  1. Dumb question - but then that's what forums are for.

I want Santa to bring me a GPS. Bit hacked off that all the car ones are £70 to £80 but bike bespoke still run to hundreds ££. Given I'm not bothered about working it with gloved hands and waterproofing is also secondary; has anyone done a set up using a car TomTom?

First off where to mount? The dumb question - is the round multi-hole wotsit in the centre of the yoke a nut (needing a special tool)? If that is removed can it be replace with a nut/ball joint (as per RAM I saw at bike show last week?)

I read Teliferizer (?!) fitting is to the steering damper mount - but surely that that needs to be free to swivel?

And lastly for power - I don't want to wire in a cigarette lighter socket. These days they all run to USB. So a USB male socket is all that's needed. Not being any way sparky knowledgeable, what else needs to go in? - the ideal is protected by a fuse and only charging when ignition is on. Although not massively keen to cut the wiring loom, so a separate line from the battery with me remembering to unplug would be a fall back. Not really an issue as I always stick onto a trickle charger.

Really basic questions I know but would like to hear.

BTW I use Tyre software (Google it) for route planning - allows a good cross country thrash in new without having to refer to maps n stuff.

    thanks for any tips

  2. Cheers pal....Boxing Day project beckoning

  3. ( i am not very elecky either ! ) why do you not want to wire in a cig lighter . seems to me a simple exercise, is wiring a usb any easier ?,,, I was thinking of just tie wrap my garmin onto the top yolk o_O

  4. PS,, my bike ( 749s ) is fitted with a " tail " for an optimiser, can this lead also be used for 12v out for use with sat nav, dash cam etc, anybody plzz ??

  5. just cos USB is smaller.....and these days mostly the satnavs come with a usb and therefore you need a usb adaptor in thr ciggie mount....just missing that bit out. I've an optimiser too.....good question.

feel so ignorant when it comes to sparks !!

  6. RAM is the way to go.

  7. Ultimate addons for power and mounting for phones if going that route

  8. Wtf does that mean ??????????

  9. ulitimate addons

  10. If your phone has a dedicated GPS chip and you don't need to see it just buy headphones.
That's all I ever used with Iphone 5s

  11. Re USB outlets on bikes, it is my understanding that these will drain batteries unless they are run from a switched power supply.
As unlike cigarette lighter type outlets which draw 0 volts, these have a constant draw in the region of 2- 5 volts, which might be OK for using everyday, but for any bike that gets laid up / used at weekends etc they can flatten batteries.

  12. Yes Optimate sell a 'car charger' type lead that plugs directly into the 'tail'

  13. thank you,, I guess I could adapt that for sat nav , dash cam etc...

  14. Your car charger that came with your sat nav will plug straight in so no adaptation required.

  15. sounds good,,,,,,,,,,,,,, checked on google but could not get close up of connections. what sort of shops sell the Optimate addons / fittings,, is it bike shops ?

  16. I don't mean to be cheeky(well I do actually) but are you having a giraffe? Has this whole post been a wind up?

  17. :Banghead:,,, I guess I will just ask about,,thank you.

  18. I'm with the previous poster in that I use my iPhone for nav directions and just have the voice commands piped thru my Cardo Q3 bluetooth helmet speakers. The iPhone just goes in my pocket. . But intrigued why you'd want to hardwire a sat nav unit. I don't possess one so forgive my ignorance, but don't they come with a rechargeable battery supply? Is the battery lifespan so short on these things that they need to be hard wired to make them effective?
