1200 DVT Grips Again...

  1. So on my new to me 2017 1200s all is ok with the exception being the heated grips don't work.
I'm aware that these are hit or miss but if I press the button nothing happens, so I'm wondering if they haven't been coded in or if they have failed would I still get the grips emblem on the dash but no heat at the bars?
On the same subject, if I were to replace them with after market grips would the din socket up front be capable of powering them as it seems a handy location to connect to? or go direct from battery?

  2. The 1200 DVT has crap heated grips. They are underpowered and and the highest setting was merely warm. When one of my grips stopped working I replaced them with a set of Oxford grips - about £75 IIRC. They are very good, I rarely go over 75% on the coldest days, and are quite sophisticated. The are powered straight from the battery and have a sensor which switches them off after a few minutes of being stationary with the engine off. When installing them a bit of thought is required to route the thick power cables. The throttle side needs to mounted so that the cable is to the underside and loops backwards over the handlebar and past the brake lever. The clutch side needs to be mounted so that the clutch lever can be fully pulled. If you go the Oxford route I can send pics of my installation if you PM me.
The DIN socket probably would be OK to connect other heated grips to as they are ignition switched.

  3. Not sure if the heated grips on the 1260 Mutley are the same or an improved version. On my 1260 they're perfect; low is what I use mainly, can be too hot around town or at slower speeds. Medium is good for when it's colder, I've never used the hot setting in anger but it has been years since I've ridden in sub zero conditions...

Minus 8ºC and an early departure for a training day back in 2011, impromptu wind deflectors quickly constructed when I saw the forecast.

  4. The 1260 has much improved heated grips, which unfortunately are not compatible with the 1200.

  5. OK, as I suspected. Thanks for the info :upyeah:

  6. Heated gloves are the best option. Heats both side of your hands and you can connect to battery or the powered ports.

  7. If they haven't been used for a while the switch may just need 'cleaning', by that I mean using. Wiggling. The swith itself can br tricky at first. Really depress it repeatedly properly without gloves to be sure.

  8. Would the dash still show they were working though if the elements on the grips have packed in ?

  9. potentially , however they are shite from brand new so I’m not sure what you’ll gain.

  10. Yes, it does on mine even though I've removed the original heated grips. The dash just seems to reflect the activation of the switch only, not whether they are functioning or even fitted.

  11. Thanks that was what I was hoping.
