GT1000 vs. Sport 1000

  1. I can get GT1000 for a decent price but the Sport1000 is 50-100% more expensive because it is so much more cool looking I guess.

How easy would it be to get a GT1000 and pimp it closer to the Sport 1000 look? Is the tank the same? Does the Sport 1000 seat fit? etc. etc.

I'm not planning for the entire 999 front fork + wheels rebuild as I loooove the spoked rims but I would have to lose the 'grandpa' rear end look and probably repaint all parts with that cool racing-orange colour.

One thing that I would definately keep is the high bars as this is one of the very few Ducatis with a decent riding position (if you don't want a Monster). The DS1000 engine is probably the best Duc engine ever built with enough power for daily road use while being pretty easy to service yourself.

    tnx

  2. The sport 1000 seat wil fit but the GT tank is shorter so it will leave a gap between the two.
As far as I'm aware the cowl will fit straight onto the GT and give you the same look, they are difficult to get though and as a consequence go for stupid money.
I think you can get a fibreglass one but cant remember where i saw it now.

You could get the diopa seat unit but that may have the same fitment issues the OE sport1000 one does.

Clip ons are easily fitted with the usual caveats of refitting all of the wires and lines etc. back into a smaller space, possibly needing a new top yoke too.

Have a browse through here as its all been done before

  3. Red Max which is Steve Hilary ex Dr.Desmo/Moto Rapido can turn a monster into SC lookalike using their own tank and bits .
You could probably build your own better spec'd bike cheaper.

  4. Thanks, great project with the Monster. I have always liked the concept of the naked Monster but I have also always looked at it as a girl-only bike because of that roundbacked gas tank, it reminds me of a Nissan Micra, which was also made for girls  If you give it a straight-backed tank and a café seat, good things start to happen.

I'm not sure that I want a project bike right now as I have two trackbikes to maintain also, one of them being a 999s that crapped the engine bearings and cracked the block last year. The engine has been rebuilt and going into the frame at the moment and I need to put the whole bike together and give it the big service tour.
