Hello everybody, Just bought an GT500 and i need to repleace the main bearings. If somebody can send me a link where can i purchase it it would be very nice. Thank You!
What is a "GT500"? If you expect anyone to help you, you will need to be a lot more specific and detailed than that.
Probably the Ducati 500GT, paralel twin. I'd try M'dina Mdina Italia, Ducati Motorcycle Specialists, West Yorkshire Or alternativly see if the bearings have a code on their rim and go to a bearing wholesaler.
Is the bike you are talking about a Ducati? There was never a Ducati model called a "GT500" so perhaps you have a Suzuki (they actually did make a GT500). People seeking help with old bikes' parts usually start off with helpfully indicating the year, the manufacturer, the type of bike, the model, and what kind of part they are looking for. It seems you can't be bothered with any of that. Fine, please yourself.
If it's the Suzuki, then you're out of luck for new parts: http://www.robinsonsfoundry.co.uk/c.../GT/GT500/A B 1976-1977/gt500abcrankshaft.htm But of course you might be able to find a specialist who can rebuild such a crankshaft, or you never know what you might find on ebay.
I'm not the OP Pete1950, and was only making gentle fun of your age.... But for your information, Ducati made a 500GT as well as a 500 Desmo Sport
Sorry that i forgot to wrire there that its a Ducati GT500 )) I tought if we are on Ducati forum then its came automaticly for everyone that we are talking about Ducati bikes.
JUst put in to the google DUcati GT500 you wil find it. According the VIN number it is form yoear 1977.
Precisely my point; Ducati never made a "GT500" like I said. They did in fact make a 500GT. It is highly amusing that you would imagine it's helpful to teach grandma to suck eggs.
I know there was a GTL GTV and sport all parallel twins but not sure but think the sport was the only one that was a desmo engine ?
i called him yesterday but he unfortunately he dont have. I get a contact from him to germany i will try it and we will see. Its bit strange that for these vintage Ducati bikes the spare parts are not avaiable any more according the Ducati dealer in our country
Spare parts for long-since obsolete models of motorbikes or cars are sometimes manufactured and supplied by specialists, but only provided the models are popular, or valuable, or well-loved. For example Ducati singles (1955 to 1975) and Ducati bevel twins (1972 to 1985) are still pretty well supported, including special racing versions. In the case of unsuccessful models which were never popular or respected at the time and have no value now except as curiosities, like the Ducati 350 and 500 vertical twins (1975 to 1979), it is not at all strange that hardly any parts are available anywhere. Ball bearings and roller bearings usually tend to be standard parts, not unique to particular models. Provided the dimensions and code numbers of a bearing are known, it may well be possible to buy one from a specialist bearing supplier. Obviously bearing suppliers do not know or care anything about Ducatis, but if you order from them by code number a bearing which they have in stock, they will sell it to you.
I am now becoming an expert in these bikes due to a screw loose somewhere! But I love the looks of them. The OP was close, but no cigar. As others have said there is no such thing as a Ducati GT500. The parallel twin originally came in 350/500 engine sizes with valve spring heads and was called the GTL. They had a poor reputation for engine reliability and frumpy styling. Taglioni eventually relented and redesigned the motor to take a Desmo head and Tartarini ...erm...tarted up the styling and the bike was relaunched with an uprated frame as the Sport Desmo or SD. The poor reputation followed this bike around and the launch of the Pantah, coupled with a high price, killed the bike off. Sales staggered into the 1980's. Unsold stock of GTL motors were put into SD frames and running gear and sold as the GTV. So there you have it. You could have a 500GTL, 500SD or 500GTV. But never a GT500. I think they will become appreciated. After all, who wants a common garden L twin??!!
