I am having trouble fitting the dustributor/points housing. All the info I can find explains how yo set up the valve gear timing by aligning the crank bevel gears and the inclined bevel gears but do not show this, seeming to then refer to the non-points models. There are no marks in the two gears within the housing, the shaft that accepts the advance-retard unit has a raised portion, the advance-retard unit will fit either way round. Does any one know what position that raised section should be in?
The mark on the distributor shaft should line up with the mark on the crankshaft. I think that's waht your 2nd picture shows. That should place the distributor shaft in the correct alignment. The bevel shafts should be lined up with marks on the distributor shaft bevel putting everything in correct alignment. This is a pic of the crank and distributor shaft. Note the dots. This pic shows the points cam, points and backplate with the engine at the timing position. The timing should be set so that the points are just opening 10ยบ before TDC on the vertical cylinder with the contact breaker gap set to 0.3mm to 0.4mm. This is the full retarded position with a stationary engine. I hope that helps.
Many thanks, that is the best picture of the area I have seen. Unfortunately my distributor us different, it does not have the extra wire coming in below, perhaps a tacho pick up. Also the mount holes for the backplate are in a different position. It is difficult to see from your photo the orientation of the cam.
Here is a picture of the advance retard unit. The crank and inclined gears are at the timing position with gear marks aligned. The distributor gears have been assembled at random as no marks on the gears. As the advance retard unit sits on a raised section it can be fitted 180' out from as in the photo. What is the correct position of the distributor gears?
