To minimise mts mileage .I thought I would get my guzzi 1100 sport 1995 carb model back on road after some 80k miles, however clutch slip? Caused me to investigate further? , engine out to inspect clutch, plates ok, so onto pushrod mechanism, oops wear/breakages, led to examine gbox, input shaft wobbly! !, gbox apart , = 3 new bearings and also new layshaft due to spline wear, web searches for best! Prices for new parts , uk and europe , large difference? , sourcing used layshaft, chris , west sussex
Apparently Baines Racing purchased all of Bernie's of Watford stock.........whether that included all the Guzzi stuff or not, I don't know.......if it did, there should be used as well as new parts. Funny I'm about about to do the same thing. I guess your totally familiar with the box, its hardly rocket science. I did a write up on taking the box apart and putting back together but not taking the shafts apart for an LMV its more or less the same box. I can give you a link if you want. There are a couple of things that can be done while in there to improve it. Forgive me if you are already familiar with these. 1) Shimming the selector drum, the factory were notoriously lax when doing it and it can greatly improve the change and the "brick in a box" clunk when changing. It will never be a Duc but it can be made better. 2) Change the clutch and layshaft bearings for the old all metal type to get rid of the phenolic caged bearings Guzzi fitted latterly (changed the bearing but the part number remained the same). Not cheap about £40-£50 each as I remember, but its recommended and makes sense. I can give you a contact e-mail address to a guy who can supply them (if you want "start a conversation" with me, like old PM'ing, if you need) 3) Check fifth gear. Later boxes (Daytona onward) went from a 5 dog clutch to a 3 dog and ditched the cush drive. This was to improve the change but as a consequence meant far greater backlash. This can cause the 5th to whine and ultimately if left, self destruct (usually ruining the whole box). The solution is to fit the old 5 dog fork and gear from an earlier model. I'm not doing this but if your box is high mileage or you have noticed a 5th gear whine now is the time. While your at it change the return spring while your in there, they are pretty notorious for breaking and cost next to nothing.
