Hands Up If You've Never Fallen Off

  1. I'm just interested, is there ANYONE on this forum who has NEVER fallen off their bike?
Toppling over at a standstill when you lose your balance doesn't count (you don't really need race leathers for that).

If you have NEVER fallen off a motorbike, can you :

    (a) write in a red font so we can pick you out from all the people who HAVE fallen off but who will post anyway (and go ahead - we can all do with a laugh).
    (b) say for how many years and how many miles you have been riding (so we know whether you are a riding god, or are going to get yours in the near future).

  2. I have never fallen off.

Although I suspect that I will now that I have said so. Thanks Glidd!

License since August 2011. Maybe 6000 miles in that time.

  3. :)
    Yes. That explains it.
    Order your leathers now.

  4. Erm...rding for over 30yrs. Ive had some 'offs'. I was off twice last year. Both at 2mph. One by a u turner. Another on a wet tiled surface. Broke toe and thumb respectively. Neither went to hospital. Both just 'healed'. Both happened in a flash.

Broken - L Shoulder, collarbone, all LHS ribs, some RHS ribs, both wrists twice each. Numerous fingers and toes. Scaphoid on both too.

    It can happen anytime.

  5. Fast forward to 9 minutes in to avoid my terrible riding (I'd only been riding about a year and a half)

  6. Only once fallen off (apart from off road ) when not my fault - entering pub car park at 16 on my MB50 when hit some ice infront of my mates - never had a car accident either when 'my fault'. Never had any accident when in excess of 40 mph that I can think of

  7. Oh dear.

  8. I dont know anyone who hasnt fallen off! I myself have crashed every bike ive owned (sometimes more than once) except my Ducatis strangely enough.

I had one mate who bought a brand new GSXR600 back in about 1999. He collected it from the dealership, followed us to the nearest petrol station (about 500 yards), got off the bike to fill it up and forgot to put the side stand down. Bang. Over it went. Brand new bike.

Most of my mates when they first started riding had low sides on gravelly roundabouts, i remember doing the same on my RD350.

I also have had a couple of mates crash on rides out with me. Nothing worse than that stomach sinking feeling when your keeping an eye on a mate behind you in your mirrors, you come around a bend and you keep looking to see if he`s still behind you only to see nothing..... Fortunately only one mate ever seriously hurt himself when he was chasing me on his fireblade and he overcooked a bend and went through a few trees and ended up in some farmers ditch. He broke his arm in 2 places. Quite sobering when your the one calling the ambulance etc.

I think the worse I had was a highside at 120mph. I ended up sliding/bouncing down the road (err, private road), the bike bouncing after me, bouncing off a crash barrier and back into the road. Luckily I was just battered and bruised. I ended up trailering the remains of the bike home (whole back end was ripped off it), then bought one with front damage and made a good one out of the 2. I had it back on the road within a few weeks. Funny thing was, the only bit I didnt have was one of the headlamp relays, so I only had dipped beam. Not a problem until one night my gf calls me up and invited me over on a promise. So off I go, keen as mustard. Flying down a long straight bit of road with dipped beams on I think to my self "im sure theres a 90 degree bend up here somewhere.... oh sh!!!!t.....!!" And I ended up overshooting the bend and laying the bike down in a farmers field. All the new bodywork was now scuffed up, then it wouldnt start cos the carbs were flooded. Ended up pushing it for a good distance before it jump started and I carried on my important mission!

Still you live and learn and after an off you tend to slow down a bit, but then you soon forget about it and start getting faster & faster again... Saying that ive not had an off since about 2002 and even then it was some idiot old bag in a car who pulled straight out in front of me. I think the older you get the less risks you take although every now and then the red mist sort of takes over!

  9. i am not going to tempt fate.

  10. There's no such thing as fate. Just physics and mathematics.

  11. true, i am much more of a karma man myself.
many many off road offs no serious injury.
17 and 3days new Rd80 driving through paisley two old fellas (drunk) stepped out from between two cars missed the first one hit the second and knocked me off the bike.no real damage done, old fella taken away in an ambulance.
lots of low side offs when younger.
    touching wood right now.

  12. Bit too much information there!

  13. On the road I've had two bad off's and four 'just got it wrongs' and ended up in a hedge or similar; all when I was a lot younger; plus on the track, two offs and one nearly off which broke a bone in my hand.......

  14. Riding for 14 years now. Been on the floor 3 times, technically only fallen off once and none required leathers.

Lost the front on ice at 10mph back in 2004, got away relatively unscathed. The other 2 were being hit from behind while stationary. First in 2001 (wrecked left shoulder, knee and ankle), second in 2009 (cracked pelvis, damaged right elbow).

  15. Riding 6 years
    2 offs both SS's
One as pillion and most of you know the other one so won't repeat myself

Quite a few near misses almost dropping my bike on my first visit to fuel up drivers pulling out
One sharp steep uphill bend nearly grinding foot pegs and wobbling off
Actually think it was my first knee down

  16. Fallen off a few times (ignoring dropping three bikes) including a 140mph + off on the track. Leathers saved the skin rash each time, not sure they do much in an impact situation, but would always wear them.

Riding 12 years and, whilst my average mileage has dropped considerably would think annual average of around only 4K a year overall.

  17. approx 40yrs on n off,first accident at 17,hit a tree,learned vespas were shite.
hit various cars,a few fences, went through a garden at about 40mph on a cossack 650,biggest surprise one was when i hit a speedboat, car shot out of side turning across a dual carrageway and i tried to go round back of it n found a speedboat on a fkn trailer.
last one was a 70mph jobbie, drunk coming towards me swerved over into my lane n left me nowhere to go except skywards,my previous experiences of learning to "eject" saved my legs as the car sliced off the complete right side of my bike.
fallen off the sidestand?..no.sorry never done that.

  18. I reckon those who are late-comers may not have, while those of us riding since before we were legal will have. I crashed almost every time I went out on a field bike and then didnt from 17 until mid 20's.

  19. I've been riding for 36 years (School boy MX) and fallen off more times than I can remember. Fastest was Silverstone, lost the front at I guess around 110, slid for feckin ages, slowest was walking pace. Came out of a junction on a ZX12r and the back did a 180 on some black ice. I was on my arse before I registered I had fallen off! Both crashes made holes on the left hand engine case, but the slow one hurt more as I did the splits when my left leg hit the floor!

  20. Ive lost count how many times i fell off my lambretta. Never got hurt on scoots though. I was young and bounced. Flew over the bars after hitting soft sand whilst hooning along margate beach. Memorable for the fact I hit my mate who was standing nearby. He got hurt more than I did. Not to mention the laughing at.

Ive crashed scoots countless times. Countless. Mostly on my own. Was involved in a 10 scoot pile up at Hove. When mate at front stopped for no reason and we all piled into each other. That was funny as fuck.
