Urm, according to the C of E, whilst the 23rd has become traditional, for 2025, St George's day will be April28th Andy
The modern symbolism of St George does make me smile. The macho knight dressed for the crusades riding his charger. The saint chosen to represent England, was born in what is now Turkey and martyred by the Romans 700 years before the French Pope credited with starting the crusades, came to office. Hairy chested jingoism at its finest Andy
Waiting for the usual 'highbrows' to remind us he wasn't English, never came to England, and is also the patron saint of blah, blah, blah.... Happy St George’s Day!
Not at all, it just amuses me to see who gets adopted as a patron saint. At least Saint David was Welsh because Saint Andrew came from Galilee and Saint Patrick was Scottish. It also amuses me that people adopt a Catholic saint, despite the predominant religion of their country. Still, any excuse to raise a pint in celebration Andy
Which I find odd because he was martyred by a Roman emperor for refusing to slaughter Christians before Islam became a faith Andy
I read he was raised on a council estate in Salford drank bitter and was a legend on the oche, but everyone is welcome to their own interpretation.
Any excuse to fly this / our flag is ok by me. All the other lunatics fly their rubbish rags on a pole in our faces.
Not sure about about that. Some might say he was a plucky young boy, saving virgin girls from death by dragons, who was murdered by a Roman Emperor. Also available for veneration in Venice, Genoa, Portugal, Ethiopia and Catalonia... Whilst others would say he was just one of the original Marvel comics characters, AKA "The Golden Legend" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Legend which was printed more widely than the bible at that time!
Plagiarising a quote from a well known 1939 film adaptation of a Margaret Mitchell novel, frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn Andy
