thinking about going,only thinking mind,my trade is a turner/miller, 36 years old, any advice?.cheers,speno.
Worked in OZ? Come on Speno....even the Australians don't work in Australia. Wait till they get up and read that! But a leaf out of their book would do us no harm.
Got a few mates over there. Diesel fitter/mechanic seems to be in demand, not so sure about toolroom type of trades. Possibly if you milk it as a specialist in a particular industry, e.g. Aerospace, etc? one mate couldn't get enough points as a painter/decorator so his missus studied the list of trades that get good points, jacked her job as a legal sec and trained for 2years to become a baker then breezed in. Stuck with bakery for a while and now she is the breadwinner in a legal firm in Brisbane. basically, you need to do the points thing to see if you qualify, then see what you can do to qualify if you currently don't.
It's a beautiful sunny day here in Sydney. I've got to go sort storage out for my 848, that I'm picking up from Eastern Creek on Sunday (track day, woohoo!), and buy a ramp so I can load it in the van. I was thinking I could pop to the beach for a cheeky swim on the way, why not! It's hot in black leathers though - my last track day was 30 degree plus and I suffered. I've been back here a year and I'm still not used to the hot stuff yet. 10 years hanging out with you lot has made me soft!
My brother in law works in perth, he is an old school miller, turner, machinist. Works for a company making one offs for the ferry industry. He has done really well started off on the shop floor and now runs the place. He was telling me when he went out there they were about 10 years behind what he was capable of doing. Work to live is the Australian moto. Mark
I would love to go but my other half is not a hugh fan of spiders, snakes etc  Plus my skills are not in demand there so I would have to rely on her being able to get a visa and then tag along.
I was there for nearly 2 years working. Great fun came home because of family issues. Would i move back??? not sure now tbh. The only thing that I found difficult were the Unions with working. Other than that work away until the surf report comes in then they all f$%* off leaving you there on your tod until they come back!!!! Forgot to mention I was out there as a refigeration and a/c engineer.
thats what i do,old school turning/milling.gonna look into the points system and what kinda pay(ball park figure).cheers.speno
