Having got my bike in its new home I have started to strip her down for the winter build/refresh. The lower cylinder area has obviously suffered from severe corrosion and the exhaust header studs/nuts were seriously bad. The nuts had corroded beyond help and a 13mm spanner was too big and they had rusted into the stud and flange. So I bought some bolt grips having seen how well these had worked for others. They pretty quickly did there job, but instead of removing the nut from the stud they have taken the studs out as well. You can see how badly corroded the nuts are and how they have split. No idea will find out soon enough, rear cylinder ones are fine so I have something to measure them against, but the lower ones came out in pieces
My guess is I'm going to have a similar problem with my SL 1's they certainly look bad, the whole engine looks a Manky mess , but I've already restored one last year so this one should be a breeze not !
I had the same thing today but not as bad as yours. Does anyone know the size and pitch of the studs?
I was just trying to avoid the ducati 200% mark up for a standard part. Done a bit of homework and an M8 x 37mm will do the trick
Don't use a standard stud, use one for high temp/exhaust stud application, otherwise you'll end up with rusted distorted stud in no time, which will be very difficult to remove without breaking. (nuts also)
I mant standard M8 thread (because I couldn't remember if it is 1.00 or 1.25mm pitch.......) not material.........but stainless is not a good idea.......nuts yes, studs no.
Howdo! Just removed the exhaust and inlet studs, hopefully these will be ok?? 8x M8 Stainless Steel Exhaust Studs + Flange Nuts Suzuki Bandit BMW Moto Guzzi | eBay Cheers Pablo
Try to avoid using copper grease on these unless you are going to keep out of the wet.........use a VHT grease if you can find some. AL
