Anyone got a 887132676 head spanner hanging up in the garage needing to be used ? Special head nut tool for a 999 head removal.. :frown:
You don't need it for removal, only for torqueing up when refitting and there are ways to do it without. Is it 15mm or 14mm?
Think it's 14 as cant find that at the moment and the 15 is a bit loose - will need to torque up as when I find out which cylinder has gone off comes the head!
Was going to put a compression tester on tomorrow however, any idea how to test for blown gasket if that fails ?
Probably is a 14mm. The older bikes use a 15mm (which I've got but no use to you) but I know they changed at some point, think it was for the testastretta engines. If you've got welding gear you can make one from a 'sacrificial' ring spanner or get a 'torque adapter' from the likes of Snap-on, unless someone comes through with a loaner...
Thanks for that I have order it .. The vertical cylinder has 5 psi the forward on the correct 11. Any idea why the gasket has gone ? Is is common at all . I thought manufacturing incorrect torque setting or a batch of flaky gaskets or maybe rear cylinder getting hotted and distorting the head :-/
Don't quite understand the pressures you've stated; 5psi & 11psi? Both are way to low, should be around 150psi IIRC? As for the head gasket going, the vertical cylinder head gasket on my 916 failed although it was only leaking coolant out of the engine so no compression problems. With regards to the cause, hard to say until you take the heads off for investigation, I think mine was just one of those things...
In that case 5 bar is way too low, about half of what it should be and definitely in need of attention.
Is that what you were trying to contact me about Richard - sorry to hear - looks as though you are sorted now though?. As said, many ways around the loosening/tightening of head nuts - I use a 'zero offset' ring/ring spanner which is custom ground at the 14 end to gain clearance. At the other end you get a generous length of stock 17 hex and can then act on that at 90 deg. Not as common on your 'stretta but there's a small chance it's exhaust valve seat recession on one/both. This is one of the last options on yours though unless neglected. Will p.m. maybe
I use these purchased off the snap on van . I think they are only in inches though but I`m sure 5/8 fits perfect .
Spanner arrived however there is no way one can get it in place and then turn it due to the frame ! Next will be an entire engine drop out or has anyone ever used the ducati special 'u' shaped spanner 887132676 which is for the job ? Just maybe this won't work either due to the close proximity of the frame . Not going to spend £ 100 on that only to find out the same .. Any thoughts ? :frown:
I don't know on the 999 but have you removed all the belt guards etc? On a 916 you can get the heads off in the frame, no problem but the belt guards prevent you getting onto the head nuts. I would think Ducati would have made this an option on a newer bike too? That said removing the engine should be easy enough.
