Heated Grips Not Working 2014 1200 M/s

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Topbox, Sep 5, 2018.

  1. Hello everyone.

In May I got my first Ducati a 2014 Multi, love it. Did a few Micro tours before riding it down to Misano for WDW, everything went superbly. Even the Italian electrics survived the Thunderstorm from hell when leaving Cattolica. So now I've chalked up 5000 miles.

Since May I could see wires going to the grips but never figured out how to turn them on (no panic as I haven't needed them). Strangely, I couldn't find anything in the riders handbook to help. Then yesterday a friend showed me how to do it, using the starter button. So I tried them on my way back from his. Nothing happened. After about 5 -10 minutes of riding a message came up saying heated Grips activated (or similar), still no heat.

    My questions are
    1) is the delayed message significant
    2) I couldn't find a thread about this but found a comment in one that said early heated grips were a problem. What was the problem?
    3) is there a likely cause or do I have to trouble shoot from scratch.

    I ask before diving in.
    Thanks in advance.

  2. The Multistrada heated grips do seem to have a finite life span. Mine is 6 years old and I'm on my 2nd set. Absolute pain in the arise to change as the 2 connectors are buried beneath the front end of the fuel tank so all the bodywork and tank have to come off. One solution used by some over the years is to chop the wires up at the handle bar and make a new connector. The actual grips are easy to fit although the throttle grip is held on by 2 screws hidden under the rubber. Andy
