1200 Heated grips - replacing the grips

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by damodici, Mar 23, 2014.

  1. Without it getting anymore confusing than the title I wondered who had replaced the actual rubber grip on the factory fit heated grips?

I've read a bit on the US forum and it seems if you go steady and very gently cut away the rubber it's possible to replace the grip parts themselves, most seem to have purchased Spider grips and they seem to offer a Multi specific pack which has two throttle grips in a pack giving you the extra internal diameter for both sides.

Is that the only option or is it possible to squeeze normal grips on there? I have a new set of pro grips in the garage I've not fitted to the R1 yet and they have always been my favourite , if not ill just have to order some multi spider grips from the states

  2. Whilst I can't offer any input, I'm going to be following this thread very carefully. Coming up to 10k on my 2011 MTS Touring S and the left grip has 2 'smooth' patches. So I need to replace the grips soon.

  3. Well in that case you may need a pair of these depending how people have got on squeezing normal grips back over the top

Notice one listing is specific to the multistrada and heated grips.

I like the concept of the grips themselves and according to reports they work really well at reducing vibration normally associated with twins and reduce numb hand

I'd also like to point out that if anybody likes the look and idea of the spider grips our very own Nelly (cornerspeed) has some in stock here in the uk, unfortunately not currently the 'Multi heated grip specific' ones but that won't matter to all if you just need a new pair of grips

  4. I too want to know this for my ST3 - anyone?

  5. I am heading to Nellys on April 7th to have this done. Have bought Ducati heated grips and Spider grips after reading articles on Ducati m.s. ( probably the one you read) If you arent sorted by then I will let you know but it seems to be relatively straightforward.I got the double throttle grip pack and want to change because I find mine uncomfortable ( 2012 PP )

  6. Well if nellys doing the cutting I'll wait and speak to him afterwards I reckon, it can't be that hard, just get a very sharp blade and cut almost through then tear apart I reckon would be the best bet, that way you're unlikely to cut the elements

  7. Yes , thats what I thought too. I dont have the heater elements fitted yet though so wont have that problem

  8. Gents, just put Grip Puppies over the top of your existing grips. A "nicer" diameter IMHO, heated grips still work and they numb some of the vibes.

  9. Can't really as the previous owner has already adapted the grips with some cover and now it just needs replacing tbh

Good call though, anything with the word 'puppies' makes me think of tits :)

Oh I haven't been very successful yet in sorting out the white wheels but I'll keep trying

  10. I had mine exchanged under warranty at about 7000 miles due to localised wearing of the grips.
The newer ones seems to be of a harder rubber and have done over 14 k miles without changing in appearance.

  11. OK I have 'experience' of this

The process is as follows - which seems to work well :

    1. Buy spider grips - you will need to buy the specific pack for heated grips which means they are both the wider version :

"GR S PEAK BLK Spider PEAK Grips for Multistrada Touring S w/ Heated Grips"

    2. They only ship from the US (no uk supplier - have checked) - but in my experience only takes a week or so and they only cost about 30 USD

    3. OK removing old and installing new grips :

    Take off bar ends

get a small screwdriver and push and prod the end of the ducati grip, lifting the edge.
look for where the heating element GAP is - the heating element goes around the grip but there is a gap.
your grip sits on top of the grip but is not glued on to the heating element apart from on this gap.
this gap has a bit of glue, so slowly lift the grip and scrape the grip off the glue slowly.
get at this point get a bit of brake cleaner OR washing up liquid/water and spray pour down the gap
the heating element is part of the actual grip so its not loose and will not came away with the grip, but take care not to scratch it off with anything blunt/sharp.
This will free off the grip and you will just need to remove the glue slowly
eventually the grip will rotate freely and you can pull if off easily

repeat for the other side- just take it easy removing the glue and adding washing up liquid and lifting..

that should be it, both grips off and you are ready to install the new ones

For the new ones, use brake cleaner/washing up liquid to push the grip on.
IF you have an air gun or can improvise with an air dryer then you can also lift the edge and blow some air in there once fitted to 'dry' up any liquid and make the grip stick on (otherwise you gonna have to wait unitl it dries and may move around until it does).

that's it test etc...(ducati do not sell separate grips, you will need to buy the whole thing again - £222)

  12. Guys, cheap option to prevent this happening or to cover wear rather than an awkward/expensive replacement.. A cricket bat handle rubber, £1-3, all colours available at many different places. One handle rubber covers both grips perfectly. you can still feel the heat as intended and my grips are still pristine beneath. My union jack ones are just knackered so am changing for more stately black but with the octopus grip. oh er missus. well comfy and the cheapest prevention about I reckon.

  13. Bloody hell that sounds hard work.

So what you're saying is that the element is glued to the inside of the grip?

Or is it glued to the plastic housing on the bar?

    Or both?

Doesn't the element then go loose on the plastic housing doing it this way, so how do you get it to stay still when forcing a new grip on?

  14. I have 3 seasons Spider Grips.
    For me, the best!
My friend has the Ducati heated grips replaced with Spider Grips, no problem.

  15. Its ok Bugs, just found a page on ducati.ms that you featured on then did the search that a chap suggested and found this:

    http://www.ducati.ms/forums/44-mult...ip-replacement-ducati-stock-heated-grips.html

8 pages and loads of pictures so kinda get it now.

It looks like Ducati glue the grips on around the circumference near the bar end but just shy of where the heater elements are stuck down to the plastic housing, I thought you meant the wire was loose and coiled around the bar whilst slotting in to a groove (think corkscrew...nightmare)

So looking at the pics and reading the posts it seems as soon as you break the glue at the end you just carefully peel them back and slice away at the rubber to split, or just use the compressed air method.

I see a chap has managed to fit pro grips on as well due to them being soft and stretchy

  16. Just like Budha, I went for the cricket bat rubber approach and it works brilliantly. Really easy, massive colour choice, plenty left over to carry out 2-3 times as and when they wear out again, which clearly they are likely to! A cheap practical option, so if you are concerned about the more complicated solution put here by the guys, try this.
    :upyeah:

  17. now you see the cricket bat grip is what the previous owner did, whilst he did a good job its started to go baggy at the bottom of one grip but as they're glued in place they reuire a lot of fiddling to get back to the start again.

id just prefer to fit normal grips if im honest, the spiders look good and are unlikely to wear out that quick surely as they're much thicker than the thin Ducati standard ones.
