Heated grips

Do I understand correctly there is a power outlet behind the headlight and if so what type of connector is required?
Has anybody got any fitted that they can recommend - and did they take much modification? Looking at some R & G ones on the 'bay -

  2. I have had Oxford ones on my ST4 for years : greatest thing since pre-cut bakery products. From my experience the plain on/off type work better than the variable heat setting type ones - but maybe that's just me... The old-fashioned way of wiring them in always used to be to tap the power off the brake-light circuit. Which ever way you do it, make sure they are switched by the ignition - no use coming back to a bike with warm grips but a flat battery... Once you've had a bike with them you'll wonder how you ever lived without them.

  3. If you download the owners manual from the Ducati site there is a wiring diagram at the end (page 403). The grips look like they are supplied by the 3 way superseal connector labelled 48.

  4. Just had the screen off my ST3 this evening and there is a blanked off connecter above the headlight - sorry didn't get a photo. But it looks like the same spare connecter under the saddle on the lh side.

I've got a set of Oxford grips on mine, with the old type controller, fitted by a previous owner. These are wired straight to the battery with a relay on the +ve side so they switch off when the ignition goes off. Although I haven't traced the wiring back from the relay to see where that draws power. But the newer type Oxford controllers have a built in circuit to switch them off when voltage drops below 12v, so these can be wired straight on to the battery, with a fuse on the +ve side - prob best not to leave that out.

    Cheers

  5. Hi,

I recently fitted some R&G Grips to my ST3, and they seem to work well. I did wire them directly into the power outlet behind the headlight - NO problems there. Good value compared to the Oxford ones, too.

    Only issues:

    - You need to find somewhere to mount the heat controller. I've mounted mine with some 'black tack' on the top of the right hand fairing. I just tuck it under the fairing when I'm not using the grips.

    - You'll need to (and this goes for most grips) file down the throttle grip inner ribs slightly to get the new grips on. I also filed down the flange at the inner end of the throttle grip.

You can get superseal connectors from here:

  6. Turned out when I picked mine up it already had some and they work pretty well
Thing is they are very thick - would quite like to fit some thinner grips but keep the heating part - is this possible or is the heated part integral to the actual grips themselves usually?
