Heated Sargent Seat | Fitted?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Vindaloo, Apr 5, 2013.

  1. Anyone wired in the heated Sargent seat yet?

Would like to get some tips before I start snipping away.

  2. The only reference I found was the same question..........doesn't mean that someone hasn't done the fitting though.

The Search facility works quite well ;-)

  3. Those instructions are prett basic.
Does the relay hav a proper plastic socket base, to ensure the connections are correct ?
I would look to mount the relay somewhere under the seat local to the battery. Maybe tie wrap it to the side trellis behind the side panel.

For the switched supply, I would use the feed to the accessory sockets, this is easy to get at to the right of the battery / back of the accessory socket.

As for the controller, that depends on how long the wires on it are. If they are long enough I would mount it up front by the fuse box cover. To do this properly may mean having to pull the panels and possibly lift the tank too, so you can get the wiring through sensibly.

Can you post some pics of the wiring as supplied and lengths of the leads ?

  4. Normal service resumed

  5. Good so it's just not me thinking they were a little basic. I don't think there is a relay with the wiring but instead tap into relay on the bike I think. Good call on the accesory socket that makes sense. The wires on the controller are quite long. Ideal place for stock look would be to mount inside right side pop up storage but don't want to mess around with holes in fairing and so forth really. Thanks for guidance

actualy no I remember now there is a little realy on it was being thick just come off nights. With the splice thing is it just a case of clipping over switched wore on loom and placing the wire from seat into it and clipping it together?

  6. The 'splice thing' / snap fit breakout connector should be consigned to the bin imho - quick and convenient yes but very likely to give trouble at a later date! (1) water can get at the bare wire/metal connection = corrosion sooner or later (2) doesn't take much 'stress' on the connector and you've got a broken wire.
Always use pukka crimp connectors at least but preferably solder all connections/connectors....heat shrink tube and/or self amalgamating tape for insulation/protection. Best to follow existing wiring looms when adding wiring and secure to that / other safe and secure points with cable ties.
FUSE....as near battery +ve as possible.
Bike electrics..........get it wrong (do a poor job) and you'll at least be let down some time........or do some harm....or worst case....FIRE!

If you have existing add-on electrics or may add other stuff in the future consider an aux power distribution box / fuse panel.
Motorcycle Info Pages - MTS1200 Electrical Stuff > Aux Fuse Panel Installs

Sorry if any/all of the above old hat or obvious........just that from time to time I do see 'wiring jobs' that make me cringe!

  7. And this might help

  8. Thanks mate. Would likely have used heat shrink around connector to keep secure and dry. Think I sort of understand how to fit but got to say I very wary of doing it wrong and messing the electricks up like you say. May just leave it til bike goes in next to dealer and get them to do it

  9. Sensible :upyeah:....or know a mate with more experience?.....or maybe there's a fellow MTS'er near you?

  10. Psalliss,
If you can take some pics of what you have I may be able to knock something up for You to fit.

send me a pm if your interested mate.

    Cheers,
    John.

  11. Thanks mate. I'll do it later if I get chance. So you want. Pics of the seat and wiring and the bike around the battery. Really appreciate it. Would like to do it myself but just cautious.

  12. John won't need the bike pics, he's got one in bits at home! Maybe add some measurements of the wire lengths though and close ups of the connectors ;-)

  13. Yep, exactly as Andy has said.
from that we can discuss how best to get you something you can fit yourself

  14. Cool. Will probably do it tommorow as the wind up here is horrendous tonight

  15. yeah, the wind in here is pretty bad tonight too, curry for tea :eek::biggrin:

  16. Wont be needing a heated seat then John W.

I always find a dam good trumping in the pants works on a cold mornings ride

  19. Sorry I completely missed the pm and thread update. Sorry. I'm on late shifts for next few days and then on nights so likely won't get chanc to call but thanks. If your able a quick step by step guide on here would be great I.e which bit to do first the controller I will prob just lob under rear seat to start with to see if used enough and worth trouble of routing it all to somewhere near the front of bike.
