Hello everyone, been a member of the board for about a year now, previously had an S4 monster and years ago had a 600 monster but never really clicked with them, I've recently gotten myself a 93' 900ss. Always fancied the Supersports and after test riding it, i absolutely love it - not too fast to get into proper trouble but quick enough and it handles lovelly: I was after a winter project after selling a bike and the SS fits the bill. Its in fairly good condition, plastics are all fine, got to change the black screen for a clear one if anyone has one they want to sell? Gave it a thorough clean to remove 20 odd years of grime and I think its come up quite well. Plans for the winter are to pull the engine and strip it - change the head bolts and crank bung. I'm also going to fit some new coils and a replacement reg/rec and tidy / beef up the wiring where required. I'll be painting the stripped engine and perhaps getting the side covers anodised black through my mate who's an electro plater, He'll also be taking care of any fasteners. I don't like the carbon cans, one of them is a bit damaged too, so I'm after an aftermarket set of aluminium ones - perhaps the e-bay 'viper' oval road legal ones? I'm off to California in a couple of weeks and am taking the opportunity to pick up some parts from CaCycleworks to save on postage and import taxes - the coils, head studs and reg/rec will come from them. Can anyone recommend any other parts that may be useful? - I'm aiming for reliability over a marked increase in performance. Oh, I'd also love to do the 'superlight look' - seat and pipes, but don't fancy the idea of colour matching a firbreglass aftermarket seat, so that thought may be on hold for a while. Tom
That's a tasty SS. The Red/Black wheel combo is a fast looker. Think that model had better studs? Lot of work there, how many miles on it? Welcome, Keith.
20k miles - i like to get my teeth into something over the winter - its a long 6 months of rain and darkness and i need a project to look forward to when i get home from my crappy job every day. Working on bikes keeps me sane! Done a few engine rebuilds now, 50's and 60's brits and a 70's jap, learning all the time - now i need to find out how a 90's Ducati engine works!
Nice clean bike pptom, My winter project has taken 2 years and I have not started building it back up never mind split the engine yet. I had a few broken studs they came out pretty easy. Plan similar upgrades to electrics, would rather have reliability than performance, I probably will never push it to the limit anyway. I would not mind a set of the Nichols studs but they are just too much. Anyway good luck with Reno Cheers Gaz
