  1. hi there my name is david I live in n.ireland own 4 bikes suzuki gsxr 750 srad 1999/triumph daytona 955i 1999/ducati 749s 2004/kawasaki zzr1400 2010. I work as a mechanic. I have some questions about my ducati its due a belt change again but since the last change 2 years ago the bike has only done 7-8 hundred miles do I really need to replace them. I do know what can happen if the belts break. does anyone have a part number for the belts other than going to ducati for them I know gates make them. is there another way to tension the belts other than using a sonic tensioner meter. does anyone know if there is a fix to cure the bike cutting out at idle.

  3. Welcome, my own view is that the two year thing is a bit over kill, if the bike is being used regularly but the mileage is low every three years IMO is fine.

  4. The idle stalling can be cured with a TPS reset and also improved with a re-map.

  8. Thanks everyone for your help & advice I just needed a push in the right direction to go ahead & replace the belts. Its the one thing I really dislike about my Duchess changing belts but it shall be done. Ps if anyone is going to the NW200 here in N.Ireland & you are coming from England please come the road racing over here is absolutely magic let me know if you are coming as I can tell you where to stay etc.

  9. My Ducati garage told me a couple of weeks ago that belts no longer have to be changed every 2 years on a 999 at any rate.
It's going in for a service next week. I'll get some more detail in that then.
I find it hard to believe than things in a closed, reasonably airtight environment would turn to mush in two years. Belts on a car don't. But hey. What do I know?

  10. Good that you found the Forum David. Re: random stalling at idle - the 749 seemed to be renowned for this happening if worldwide Forum Documentation is anything to go by. Although fine tuning may reduce the problem it would appear that it doesn't always cure it completely and some have even resorted to reducing valve overlap by 2 or 3 degrees in an attempt to improve matters. Hopefully a specialist with plenty of first hand experience will add some input more directly 'from the horses mouth'.

  11. Thanks for the info Chris I was aware that Ducati never brought out soft ware to cure this you have answered my question as how to try & cure the problem its the only thing that annoys me about my Ducati dealership they dont want to know. They are happy to sell you the bike charge you plenty of money for servicing simple stuff but not interested in trying to put other problems at bay. I will put my mechanic head on & try & sort it myself. ps this forum is great it just gives me more info I need. Thanks again.David.
