168 miles from home about to pitch north east from New Quay in Wales, I move off and there's no speed reading on dash and a warning light. I stop, ignition off/on to see if can clear the fault and then unable to restart. No luck bump starting, just lots of rear wheel lock and sliding. AA attend. Bike starts with jump battery pack. Multimeter shows battery climbs from 10.7ish to 11ish volts when rev slightly but no further. So charging system failure. Stranded overnight after waiting 6 hours for recovery truck only to be told they were struggling, can they try in the morning (I'd already paid upgrade AA fee and recovery cost at £2.50 for every mile over 50miles... £££) and spending a night in a holiday chalet kindly given to me by Woodlands Holiday park (charging me for laundry only which is very generous) I'm now finally on way home. Via several trains and taxis. Bike should hopefully arrive at my home after rides on back of two trucks that I can't travel in because.... Well because the world has gone mad. Anyway. I didn't wager on having it taken straight to garage as no real guarantee of its arrival time at said garage. When it gets to me should I got a new voltage regulator and battery and see what happens or is there a need to check stator as well...? I can probably manage all this as not got any riding planned in near future. Or as a novice with a spanner should I endeavour to get it transported to garage? Anyone know anyone who moves bikes for less money the the AA do? I'm in Saddleworth in-between Huddersfield/Manchester. Cheers.
if it's the first sign of similar symptoms then every chance that just the regulator will fix it, but couldn't guarantee of course. Unless regulator had started to over rather than under-charge then battery should be fine.
I’d whip it over to ducati John in Leeds (Bologna vee twin) if it’s tomorrow I can help but I’m spain boat Wednesday
On the same sort of problem with my 08-848, when a multi meter is put across the battery and the engine is revved what is the "normal" voltage rise? I did mine today, the battery appears to be a new gel type, clean as a whistle. At idle I was getting about 14 and when revved it only rose about 0.3-0.5. or so. When the ignition id turned on the display gives 12.2v. It took at least 3-4 decent attempts to turn over but when running and warm she seems fine. I have had her on the optimate regularly through the extension from the battery and its all been a bit up and down. She has been on the optimate again today and I'm getting two greens. I ask as it is a new bike to me and its a similar issue. I have mentioned it to the dealer. I think it may be a duff battery but if its a charging issue then that is whole different kettle of fish. Are the 848s prone to reg/rec charging issues? Are gel batteries OEM standard?
Cheers, I was planning to take it to John end of November for a few bits and bobs, I'll try the regulator and battery in the coming weeks but if I get stuck not able to shift it can I get in touch? Cheers.
