Hey guys, Just a quick one, I promise. Replacing sprag on the old girl tonight and all going swimmingly. However one tiny issue that's defeating me . How the hell do you get the flange off the fly wheel? I've started two or three screws and no luck. (As per manual) Is there a trick to this? Help. I'm on the final push to summer time heaven ! Anyone? Surely the amount of sprag issues the 999 has faced someone must have faced this dilemma ???? Andy
Take all the screws out of the flywheel. Looks like you're there. Fit three in from the back, equally spaced, with a few threads engaged then tap the flange out of the flywheel. Couple of taps at a time so the flange comes out level. There's a lip on the spray bearing so the flange holds it in place.
Cheers nelly, That's what I have tried to do but doesn't seem to want to budge. I take it I'm tapping the screws as the flange has no purchase to hit with a hammer. ??? I'll give it a go later this evening again !
Yep. Tap the screw heads. The thing has to come out dead square. You could fit the screws, turn it over with the screw heads on the bench and tap the flywheel down. Same difference
Possibly, but tbh I've never had to down that route. If it does tighten, I tap it back in and start again. They're the same/similar material so heat probably wouldn't help too much
I think the theory is that if there is any difference between The dimensions and the materials have the same expansion characteristics, then heating both equally will expand the gap as well, rather like enlarging a photo. However, if the inside diameter of one is the same as the outside diameter of the other (an interference fit?) then there is no gap to expand, so heating won't help. Experience is much more valuable than theory though...
All sorted gents thanks. Had to slip her into the vice and tap a wooden block equally between all the bolts. Not technically the prettiest way but worked for me !
